It's just a question buddy, dunno why all you begin with that, I live of to be a concertist in classical guitar, so I do live already of music, it's just a wonder I have always had.
Kopi =o.

Kopi...don't get offended by them. They are only defending this:
That music should be made because of the love of making it and having others enjoy it. That passion is the driving force behind it. If not..its not worth trying to make a living out of it. It has to be purely motivated by the love. Not money.

Your question remains valid, for sure! Obviously it's good to know where you would stand should you be able to get the attention of some labels! They are just saying that you need to continue with life as usual to get the bills paid and if you happen to get good at it...it'll be because you love doing it. There's definitely a corelation between how good someone is, how much they love producing and how successful they can be at producing for a living!

Whoa now, there's a big difference between making music for the money and merely wanting to know how much you make for producing a track or two (like kopi).

Everyone would like to aspire to something, you know, just to know where the next rung on the ladder is (and what's at the top of the ladder). Maybe some producer really wants to become someone like Moby, who doesn't have to worry about a second job because his producing skills earn him enough to have a professional studio and support the lifestyle he likes to live (whether it be buying a nice pair of shoes vs. a porsche, like Gerry said). It's like anytime the word *gulp* money is said on these boards everyone shits his pants and says the same damn thing - kopi just wants an honest answer to a direct question.

As for the question, sorry I can't answer it.

but sometimes money is important... to buy some kick ass hardware to produce more satisfied track... i dont think is good that we invest too much on hardware & stuffs...because we need to estimate ourself.. example: "if i got signed.. then i will buy a fancy & expensive synth to produce better music" so i think kopi & others and me as well has the right to know bout this.. again.. it depends that someone is wise enough to tell us...

I heard at least US$1100 per track.. for the 1st time u got signed.. (i heard, i dont experience it )
Correct me if im wrong.. peace to all

Cheers & happy producing!

Nah unless it sells awesomely and you have someone made a remix for free for you or a EP.

It can pay decent.

However let me add to your money is important thing. IT is so much better to get paid a bit by the one thing you adore doing, it beats working in a supermarket or mcdonalds .

I doubt anyone (except Benni Benassi) produce music BECAUSE of the money. I will continue producing music until I die, no matter the income.

For me, it's a hobby - and will always be. Of course, it would be cool to earn a living out of the hobby, but don't expect it. Very few manage this.

kopi this is how it works mate usally u get signed to a label lets say john dowweaowejawenkl label every 3 months they release a sales report and thats usally when u get paid of all ur earnings for those three months. I'm not sure every label works like this but most do. Its not near enough to make it by as other said it takes other incomes to support ur self.

lol
well as many have said before in interviews... you cant make a living off producing, and as the first replier said: become a DJ, they make tons of money!

although there are some idiots that live in my city that PAY 1000 dollars to dj in a club downtown, damn i cant get enough of how stupid they are! o well their loss (and they think its cool)

but anyways, if u produce tracks and get signed every month, thatll be a nice living i think hehe

but it does have to sell a lot, biggest pay offs are compilations id have to say, but again, become a dj

i dont dj and prolly wont for a while or ever who knows... i just love producing i believe if u can stick to one thing, u can be at the top of the game if u try hard enough hehe

and remember, its not for the money but for the music...

I love producing tracks to a point where I can just stay working on a track for hours and hours and hours, take a nap, wake up again, and go back to work for more hours.

It is fun and I enjoy it.

My "Pay" (for now) comes in the form of the feeling I get from sharing my track(s) with others and them enjoying those tracks.

But...

here is where things get complicated,

I will ultimately need another form of compensation = $$$

IF I am producing good quality tracks, and I am getting a lot of remixing deals and so forth (1 or 2 a month), I will need money in return in order to compensate for the time lost/Not worked out there in the "real world" (not getting a paycheck from anywhere else to pay "the bills").

Its like I am not in it for the money but at the same time,

I am in it for the money.
