the biggest complaint i had was with how management/advertising/pr misled people early last year with respect to ticket prices. entry was being advertised as one such price, but at the door, it was jacked up at least 5-10 dollars on top of the advertised price. the fact that it was being played off by people as, oh it was WMC, people were too busy to update, along with a bevy of excuses didn't do much to endear avalon to a lot of people on the boards.
i think the ventilation thing is the biggest problem within the club, and once you add in so many people in such a tight area, the problem is compounded.
sound leaves something to be desired, but has improved with the removal of speakers, and i'm sure other changes as well.
i can get past all these factors for certain djs... but for me, the whole pricing snafu definitely left a sour taste in my mouth, and is my number one reason for not going to avalon. the trust isn't there.

Same thing happened in Spirit this past weekend on Thomas Schumacher. Here it said $25 $20 with the flyer or guestlist. Once we got there it was $30 & $25 with the flyer/guestlit. This is where I have to handed to Crobar, never had a problem with their gueslist/admissions. LOL. They tell you straight out its $40!

My final post regarding this topic.....
Running a nightclub, unfortunately, is a business. You have no idea how much money it takes to successfully run a nightclub in this city. With all the laws working against us, sacrifices must be made. By this I mean that we need to fill the club in order to stay open. We can't just rely on the true music heads b/c quite frankly, there just aren't enough of us to fill any large club. That's just the reality of it. If we were going to only cater to true music lovers, we would have lasted about a week here in NYC.
Like I said, the majority of people that "go out" in NYC have no idea what to expect musically when they enter a club. This is an MTV market where eye candy conquers over substance. There are guys in every club aggressively hitting on women. My sister got hit on when I brought her to Cielo, Centro-fly, Crobar, and yes, even Avalon. It happens everywhere you go! And I can't even begin to describe some of the things that happens when I go anywhere with my cousin. She practically gets molested EVERYWHERE she goes and I usually spend the night beating guys off with a stick! Women getting hit on isn't anything new, it happens in every nightclub.
My point is that Avalon, along with every large capacity club in America suffers from the same problems. Trust me when I tell you that we try to be fair at the door, attempt to cater to a better crowd, and do our best to provide a positive nightlife experience for everyone. There's ALWAYS something to complain about wherever you go, but keep an open mind I'm sure the positives will usually outweigh your complaints.
As for the Tiesto night last summer, I agree, it was HOT! I was at the club from 10pm to 7am so trust me, I suffered more than any of you. And for the record, my DJ booth is just as hot as the dancefloor. I couldn't get around the club nor could I find a comfortable place anywhere in the building that night. But what did I do? I MADE THE BEST OF IT w/o complaining.
And let me leave y'all with this little nugget of wisdom. "You can please some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."

Bite Me, or Why I Hate Avalon.
By Miss Bliss
Getting hit on is nothing new, but getting hit on at Avalon more often than not involves getting your tits literally grabbed or getting some guy literally throwing himself on you. The only other club where the pick-up scene is comparable is Webster Hall, which is even dirtier. Crobar, Spirit, Roxy --> I have never been hit on to the extent that I was hit on at Avalon. I believe this is because the bridge and tunnel crowd goes to Avalon, and in general a bunch of dirty people who for whatever reason, like to frequent that club.
That leads me to my next point. Changing the crowd at Avalon would be nice, but not enough people care about that to come out and have a real good EDM lover concentration on any Avalon night. Simply put, too many real EDM fans who love a DJ playing at Avalon have had such bad experiences there that it would take an open bar, free lap dances, and free admission to bring them back. Just make some of the lap dancers male for us ladies, thanks.
The sound sucks. I have heard *horror* stories about NYE with Sasha 1.5 years ago. I'm talking the sound system ruined their night even though they were fucked up out of their minds. When something bothers you when you're fucked up, that's how you know something's REALLY wrong. When I went to Avalon for Judge Jules, I couldn't hear what songs he was playing and the lyrics were so fuzzy. I was on the main floor and also had to strain my neck to see the DJ.
Which brings me to the next point. The layout BLOWS. It's hot as fucking hell. The main floor is tiny and you can't see the DJ. You can hardly find the bathroom. Bouncers are idiots and assholes. They jack up prices and lie about them.
I could go on but I've made my point.
Now let's think about Spirit, Crobar, or Roxy...
Spirit: DJ booth is elevated, I don't like that. I like to look at the DJ's face. But main floor is big enough and layout is simple. There are places to sit, and that's huge! The A/C works. And they give huge shots at the bar.
Crobar: No complaints at all. Crowded on 18+ nights, but I deal with it since I'm only 19. Main floor is big enough. Nice spots to hang out on the steps to the left of the DJ booth. DJ booth is actually almost on the level with the crowd! I love it! Visuals and lights are cool.
Roxy: Main floor is ginormous, so it's perfect for artists like PVD and Armin to pack the house. Why anyone would go see Tiesto at Avalon is beyond me. Do you enjoy the risk of death by trampling? Roxy is easy to get around in. And I have fond memories there.
I'm tired of typing about a topic that will never get resolved anyway. I say turn Avalon back into a church... But go ahead, keep on earning your money in this difficult difficult business, Avalon...
