Man, it feels like I haven't had an "on" day in forever... Lately it seems like no matter what happens in a set I always have at least one major trainwreck rendering a recorded set virtually worthless...

What's even worse is that I've been have some really "on" mixes, like shit I've never really tried before (3, 4 decks at once, Ableton shit) and have it come off running pretty smooth but then I'll ruin the next four by having my phrasing off by like 4, 8, or 16 beats, which just leave that little space where you hear the beat drop out (Or whatever change it is) that just sounds swkward. When it comes down to it, maybe it's not things that the crowd is really noticing, but man sometimes the littlest shit that I can hear, even if NO ONE else can, bothers me more than anything.

I guess maybe I'm not trainwrecking as much or as bad as I think, but I'm definitely stuggling to find my way back to where I know my potential lies...

Cheers,

RJT

definitely on and off days. i find that, some nights, a single beer will put me 'off' for the night. which is a pity considering how much i like beer.

I find that I get a few weeks where I nail everything and all I want to do is play on the decks. I end up playing on my decks so much that I get sick of it and slowly but surely my mixing turns to shit for a further 2 weeks, then grdually it comes back to me if I cut down my turntable time.

I think it's cos I've outgrown the bedroom enviroment and it bores me to just go in and mix for long periods of time without anyone there to appreciate it.

I've got my first 2 gigs coming up in May so hopefully i'll be able to perform well enough to keep getting gigs and I can leave the bedroom dj'ing behind.

Man, I hope I never outgrow the love of DJ'ing for no one... I have to admit, playing for a crowd > playing alone, but even after a few years I still just lose myself in the music every time I spin... well until I trainwreck something, after all it's kind of hard to get down to the sound of "Trainwreck in B minor..."

I think the bedroom is like the DJ's laboratory, maybe I'm wrong, but I still think that even if I did start playing out extremely regularly (4+ times per month I guess, seems like an arbitrary number, but meh) the place where I'd take the most initial risks is right at home...

I've noticed my big "ON" days come when I'm really frustrated with something other than music. It's a really nice outlet.. I can go for hours when I'm in that mood.

off days are common place, but when you have an On day, be sure to have the recorder on.
