How much does it cost to copyright a song anyway? A friend of mine in Spain says he pays 15 euros, I have no idea how much it's here though. I've also had friends in the past mail a burned CD with the song to themselves and keep the envelope closed, that way they can prove it's theirs. I heard that the law changed though and that it doesn't work anymore, not 100% sure about that though. Could be that I read it here on TA a while ago...

Hey. To tell you the truth, I dont have an exact figure but I can tell you attourneys that practice property law and the likes run in the area of $10,000 a case. Of course, that is all dependent on the attourney. some attournys that practice property law and lawsuits and similar cases will actually only take payment if they won the case. No such luck with copyright attourneys and other specialist attourneys. A friend of mine had an attourney that specialized in Medicaid cases which tend to be some of the better paid attourneys. His bill ended up being close to around $75,000 but it was a pretty lengthy process as well. Like I said, I dont have any exact numbers on copyright attourneys but attourneys that specialize in corporate and government fields tend to get paid a lot more than most attourneys that do a broader base of cases.

Cheers,
Zac

for Dutch guys there's an easy way to register your song and put your mind at ease: burn it on CD and have it registered (the CD gets sealed in an envelope, signed and dated) by the Tax Office. Cost: about 6 euro...

Beast,
Why do that when the date on a postage stamp is also legal? Just mail it to yourself and don't open it. As long as the post office dates it, it'll stand up in court.

I doubt wheteher that would hold in court in Holland: it's quite easy to temper with an envelope that you mailed to yourself.

Say if you mail it to yourself and don't shut the envelop.. you can then change the contents of the envelope at any time...so the date of the postal stamp doesn't say anything about the date of the contents...

It's really not that hard !!

Just keep the original reason, cubase or logic file on a cd and then show it to the courts with your laptop or whatever, and get the defendant to produce his/hers. If that tune is yours they'll know.

Simple

Or don't spred your tunes around on the internet or to unreptuable record companies.
