Interesting question. Interestingly, in some lesser developed countries such as Russia or Cuba(this is purely based on my observations) it would've been "natural" to help out the person.

Not sure what I would have done. I guess it would depend on whether the person looked sincere and whether his story was believable.

Having said that, my grandmother in Israel once fell victim to such scam. Basically some guy knocked on the door, said he was lost, and had to use a phone. My grandmother let him him, and let him talk on the phone. She had very little Hebrew knowledge at the time and couldn't really understand what he was talking about. She found out with the next month's phone bill. Turns out the dude called some very expensive psychic service.

I must agree that you indeed did the right thing. Although I'd like to say that its sad that we even have to discuss things like this...

Too bad we dont live in a world where we can open the door to a stranger in trouble without worrying about getting bound, gaged, robbed, beaten, raped, killed (am I missing anything here?)

Am I the only person who'd actually help out?

I've had similar circumstances, twice, and I've let the person in both times. Once a woman in her 40's and another time a dude in his 30's. Maybe it's because as someone who has a little height, I've lost all sensability and fear, but I don't at all feel threatened by strangers. Really, what's to worry about? The person doesn't know or have the keys to my place, they can't steal anything because I'm watching over them, and if they wanted to kill me, they could/should have done it at the door. Furthermore, there are some big knives in my kitchen, and I know where they are. And rape isn't really an option, unless they plan to make my the catcher, in which case, I repeat the fact I know where the knives are in the house.

hun...I am a girl....it's sooo different for us.
Trust me I wish I was as niave as I was when I was like 18...back then I would have probably let them in. How a days I am too freaked about about what can happen.
