He uses cdjs. He uses cdjs quite well. Nothing he does with them is "unreal" though.

I have to agree. Althought I'm sure there are turntablists out that there are better than him technically, at the moment he really seems to be king. |
He is not a turntablist.

Easily one of the best if not THE best turntableist....
One of my fave DJs |
He is not a turntablist.

He is doing something interesting, absolutly, he does blow "armin or tiesto" out of the water. However at the same time, one could easily name 50 other EDM djs that do even crazier technical stuff, however they are not as successful as him, and there is a reason for that.
I think whats important to remember, is that regardless of how he is marketed by his "mad skills" at the end of the day he is still an EDM dj. The reason he got where he is isn't because of his scratching, it isnt because of they way he pushes hot cue buttons on a cdj, it is because he plays good records.
Listen to his bedroom bedlam winning mix its pretty much what started it all for him, and it was mixed with 2 technics, and a djm600 mixer (I beleive) Thats right, no cdjs.
No hot cues, no loops, and loop out/in adjusting, no beat cutter, no echo loop/delay drum edits, no Auto Transform Jet/Zip scratching, no movie sampling, just playing records, and a VERY small amount of simple old school scratching (with vinyl, and a crossfader) As far as I know, the same goes for his "4" mix cds. I have not listened to them, but they were recorded early in his career, and from what I've read from various sources, they were recorded with regular old equipment as well (same stuff as the bedlam set) I listened to 1 of the disks at a friends house and again, all I could hear was a bit of simple regular style scratching. His 2002 essential mix and Sound In Motion, utilized CDJs, but sound and motion did not feature any use of the EFX500, that means still no Auto Transform, Jet/Zip scratching. This seems to have come some point after that, because it is featured in his 2004 essential mix, and Alive CD.
The point is his career was not started because of "Mad Turntablist Skillz" Because, to be honest, in comparison to tens of thousands of other djs, he simply doesn't have them. His career started for the same reason all other other EDM djs have, which is the fact that he plays good records, that people enjoy, and he did'nt blatantly rip off any other djs sound. Of course his gimmicky little tricks have helped to hype him up alot, but in the end, for all EDM djs, its about the music they play.
Beatmatching, Equing, Utilizing effects processors, cue points and scratching (especially the auto transform scratch he uses) are things that can be taught to any able bodied person in a reasonable amount of time. Someone with a fair amount of musical training in the past should pick these things up like nothing. Although creativity when using these devices can't be taught so easily, however for most people (again especially people with musical pasts) it should come with a bit of time.
REAL turntablism on the otherhand, is much less pushing buttons, listening to beats closely, and giving a platter a bunch of long backspins. REAL turntablism takes alot of physical skill coordination, and MUCH more creativity, seeing as you only get to work with the same tools they have been working with for decades.
In closing, all I'm trying to say is that what makes him so amazing isnt his technical skills, its his track selection, just as it is for any other EDM dj. If people focus so much on his technical skills, what are they going to do when (if) they ever realise there are ten thousand other djs out there with skills way superior to his? Are they going to stop listening to him? No, because they dont play the records he does (unless they do...in which case they are a ripoff.)
