Prostitution exists, partially, because of mental whoring. Prostitution has always existed, and will always exist. We're human, sex is great, prostitutes provide the services that other girls can't (because of the taboos established by our society), or don't want to. Right, that's not where I am going with this.

What I mean to say is that prostitution is a method of distraction for the laymen so that they do not become aware of the mental whoring that is occuring. By distracting the people, mainly by things that Light78 said, but also sex (for who doesn't get distracted by sex?) they stay in the dark. ok, normally i can articulate exactly what i mean through writing, but i've been having trouble concentrating on anything the past few weeks... (maybe cuz of sex? lol)

I think the reason why Epicurus isn't getting a whole lot of opposition is due to the fact that 95% of TA's are guys.

Bring on some reasonably intelligent women and we'll have an interesting debate.

No....wait a sec......women throw logic and reason out the window whenever it comes their insecurities about men. It won't be much of a debate. You win Epicurus.

this difference is what makes ppl stomac turn. ppl can stomac murder and disasters much more then crimes of sexual nature

example. O.J simpson case, the man murders his wife, and they play it live on national TV.

Michael Jaskson sexual abuses kids, and they are gonna be showing that on TV.

sociaty is not comfortable with issues of a sexual nature.

i think this is the only difference in perfection

Who would have thought that we could agree on something. My pondering had a certain rhetorical element to it, and that's basically the point I was trying to raise. It seems, objectively at least, that whoring of the mind is much worse, in terms of it affecting society at large, for instance, than whoring of the body. Yet, the stigma is attached to the latter, and for the irrational justifications that you mentioned. The interesting question is: why?

It seems to me that humans in general have always been uncomfortable around sexuality, and have historically gone to extreme measures to repress sexual desires. It's no coincidence that all major religions tend to focus their most potent efforts on chastizing sex and sexuality, by associating it with animalistic and/or "unpure" bahaviour. There have been many intricate rituals that have been conjured up by the moralizers of society, to control behaviour in general but sexuality in particular. And personally, I'm sick and tired of it. From a rational perspective, their position makes no sense.

That's some pretty profound stuff Epi, you articulate yourself very well! But we can't always refer to these "mind-whores" as "they," because living in the western world, each and every one of us has a section of our minds whored to the American corporations, even if you don't always realize it. They bombard us with ads in every aspect of our lives, telling us that the key to being happy, popular, individual, etc. is to buy and consume their products. But surprise: in our North American consumer society, the number one disease is Depression. But people keep buying shit they don't need because of these ads, fueling the corporations to grow even more, own even more aspects of our lives...They own the products, they own the media that promotes the products, it never ends! Anyway I could go on and on about this shit...I just took a whole class about it lol. JinX_33 knows what im talking about.

I know what you're talking about LIGHT, but honestly, I wouldn't categorize that as whoring one's self as much as being brainwashed. For you see, you have to be conscious about the decision to whore yourself, which is not the case when marketing and advertising tentacles reach our subconscious minds and "tell us that the key to being happy, popular, individual, etc. is to buy and consume their products".

u make a point nikkkkkk..... but with out this prostitution there would be no advances in technology and so forth.. our lives would be compleatly useless.so technically is not the same.

Nachoooooooos...I agree to a certain extent, but at the end of the day, I tend to view the consequences of our actions as a balance between positive and negative affects. If the positive outweighs the negative, then that action can be justified rationally. That's why I tend to focus on examples that are less controversial than doctors, who clearly bring about positive change in society.

Take for instance Wall Street and the world of business in general. Most people in that field are fully aware of the negative ramifications of their jobs (or at least you'd hope they are), and thus by extension, their actions, but go about renting their minds to these firms regardless and despite that because it's a "legal" way to make a good buck. In society at large, they are praised and lauded. And yet, their actions are much more detrimental, as a whole to society, than the poor whore in the slums of Rio.

And let's not forget that the whore's actions have benefits. She is giving this man sexual pleasure and releasing his sexual tension, which has positive ramifications in many ways. Perhaps, he won't take out his frustration of not being able to get layed on someone else?

Anyway, I think it comes down to the point Mike made and that I expounded on above in my reply to him.

Sorry to bring up an old thread again, but I just finished reading a great book that was related to this thread and called "The Honest Courtesan : Veronica Franco, Citizen and Writer in Sixteenth-Century Venice". I've always been intrigued by the lives of courtesans in the Renaissance, especially Veronica Franco, whose persona was used to make the movie "Dangerous Beauty". Anyway, it's a bit of dry read, but gives you insight into the life of one of the most famous courtesans in history, and one of the most intellectualy accomplished feminists of all time. She (and others) viewed herself (her) first and foremost as having "intellectual and artistic significance" before being a sex symbol, although she was quite adept at simultaneously satisfying the most primitive of male desires when the latter could help her further certain ends that she felt passionate about. What a woman
