now i'm confused. when you guys say no mp3 dj's, do you mean the ones who make their entire mix using a program then output that to a file? or just anyone who uses mp3's in any way.
if the latter, i think thats a quite biased opinion. i myself use mp3's (currently) to mix my music, but i pipe out two channels to my mixer & do it that way. personally, i think it requires a certain degree of skill to do that (albeit not as much as vinyl). one still needs a good track selection, good entry/exit points, etc, etc. handling vinyl is not the only skill that makes a dj. |
I agree. building a mix in a program like mixmiester should not be allowed, as that is not Djing, but almost like production, it isn't live.
but if you are using mp3s, and 2 soundcards, and going into a mixer, it really isn't much different than CD mixing. I use a program called vtt, and it is almost the same as tech12s, you have two decks, a pitch slider with +/- 8%, a jogwheel like on a CD player. there is no autobpm or any of that crap in the program, you have to do everything manually.
I have some trance vinyls, and I use my friends turntables quite a bit, really, it's almost the same, except for starting the record, you push it instead of tap a key at the right time. once it's started then you beatmatch it with the pitch slider, and it's virtually the same.
I really don't think mp3 djs should be disqualified, just because they don't have the real equipment, they still have skill.
and besides, as for bpm counters, mp3 decks, CDs, how will you know? it's all music, these are only tools, who's to say an artist is only good if he uses the expensive paints, especially if you can't tell!

I'd also like to volunteer as a judge.
I've been listening to trance for years, I've heard many awesome live sets of all different genres.
I've been playing around with VTT for two years, and recently started buying vinyls to use with my friends turntables until I get enough money for my own.
I know what a good mix sounds like.

That is my main point. Sequencer programs are just that, not live. I used to mix using VTT a few months ago, ans its nothing compared to CDs or Vinyl, I don't mind people using VTT or Traktir for a song or two as long as the set is live like CDs or vinyl, I just don't think that you can really achive true DJ status until you have the ability and equipment to be able to do it. Anywas as an MP3 DJ YOU ARE ILLEGAL and unless you have purchased CDs or Vinyl and ripped it. Fully illegal mixes are just not lawful or morally correct, I know I will get flamed for those comments and I also have used a couple of Mp3's burned to CD, but that is just because I can't get them on vinyl or legal CDs. I hope you understand where I am coming from.
I think you should be a judge RavingLunatic, you seem to have good views and a reasonable musical knowledge. What % would you give me for my traclist on first view.

I think wav editing, production mixing should not be allowed, but VTT and traktor should.
true, it's illegal, but it's not like we are trying to sell these mixes, they are only for a little friendly competition.
and besides the point still stands that this is all on the honor system, there's no way you can tell anyway. so lets just have a heap of people put in a heap of mixes, and a heap of people vote on which one is the best.
as for your tracklist, it looks GREAT. you have some really good tracks in there, including my favorite of all time Lost Tribe - Gamemaster. I like the original mix better than the signum, but hey..
I love that song, I've heard it mixed so many different ways, I'd love to hear yours too.
please get it uploaded somewhere.

alrighty...now i'm confused again. i was under the impression that most vinyls were 'promotional material' (or at least the white labels)...if someone rips these vinyls to mp3, how is this illegal if (a) its promotional, and (b) no money is made from playing it?
I do thank RavingLunatic for supporting my position...but boy_luke, man, i gotta ask how the hell you think mixing mp3's using a real mixer & mixing cd's differ that much. both are digital mediums...you have to beatmatch on your own, the physical features (cueing, etc) are the same.....i can't seem to see the big difference. now, maybe for purists there is a difference, but c'mon....if you're just being picky, i'll accept that....but put your bias away dude. dj's should be allowed to be creative in whatever way they want....and if that means mixing using digital music, so be it.

yeah, cheers to that guys!
the canadians speak out!
personally my dream setup is what I got down there in my sig, (with silver tech12 MK3Ds though), VTT with a good computer, 2 soundcards and monitor, and 2 Pioneer CDJ1000s. I could hook it all up to the DJM600, and be good to go!
unfortunately, I need about $5000 or more canadian for all that, so I'll just have fun mixing my mp3s with VTT for now.
I might even enter the competition.
