it all goes back to Americans deciding to expand to the southern US. Too many teams in bad markets...too many players. Talent level = decreased. Game = worse off than before southern expansion. Who made those decisions? Bettman and his (mostly American) cronies.

So true about the NHL. Smitty lets not all blame it on the Americans. Quebec & Winnepeg(sp) had problems too. Although I do agree that they shouldnt have expanded to some areas.

Absolutely. American sports is about big money and franchising. Manchester Unites is admitedly the closest thing to the New York Yankees in football but it still retains an important traditional and cultural stance in the sport. Considering the vast marketability of the stadium, it is still named Old Trafford and not "The Vodafone Dome" or something more money spin-worthy like that. Talk to any old non-English speaking man in, say, Bolivia and chances are he can say Manchester United. The club did not buy itself into being the richest football club in the world but through success on the pitch.
When American sports teams go kaput they are simply bought out and often even change cities. Witness the shift of the Montreal Expos Baseball team to Washington. Montreal has no baseball team anymore! Can you imagine if Manchester United just packed up, closed shop and moved to London??
The financial and culutral dynamics of North America sports teams are totally different from those elsewhere. Glazer better have a damn good team of advisors and board members.

hardly... one European Cup final in 35 years?
for all their domestic dominance here for the last 10/12 years, they are not the mythological giant of football they make out to be...
the only people who think Man U are the biggest club in the world are their own fans/staff, they're simply the most well marketted...

still upset...
I think it's kind of cool an American wants to buy the most recognizable football team in the world...lol... just another thing we can take over... I think it's hilarious.... can't ManU fans like buy majority ownership through stocks and stuff, or can they only get like 49% of the team? I have no idea how it works...?
Hey, think of it this way, no one wanted THE OUTSIDERS: John Henry and Co. to take over the Red Sox, and now they won the World Series... so maybe it isn't such a bad thing...
