layer (along with filtering n eq), compress pitch them up/down use the pitch in fruity's sampler add other percussions to give color or something. with the lack of cpu and ram the one thing ive learned best is how to make kicks lol. just experiment with samples from comercial tunes maybe and make your own. there are lots of ways put mostly layerin g and pitch env.

Hi guys! thought I'd lend a hand! Placed 5 kicks I have programmed onto 'yousendit' (no other means)! These are dry samples layered with others and the odd bit of overdrive here and there!

Lemme know how you get on and if you want more?

Enjoy!

How do I add overdrive? I use that cheeky little plugin in FL Studio called 'Fruity Blood Overdrive'! My advice to anyone programming kicks is not to overdrive a kick sample twice because the kick starts to sound 'skwishy' (pardon the expression) and you lose the punchness.

I tend to layer two kicks - a punchy kick coupled with a subish kick to make it breath a little and add depth, (use the in and out dials - ‘precomputed effects‘ in the channel settings on a sample instance in FL). These vary the amount of volume either at the start or end of the sample - very helpful! You have to be very careful when you choose your kicks when you layer them. You can’t choose any old kicks. What happens is the two bass frequencies of the kicks cancel each other out resulting in a dip (rather than a tapered waveform) which sounds mashy and real crap! When you've got a nice tapered waveform kick you can add rim shots which add a little punch or add a hi hat to give it that ‘tiss’ sound at the start of the kick (G&M Project style). I never compress the kicks because you tend to compress them in the mix.

Generally that’s how I do kicks, basically explained in a nutshell! Sometimes I layer 5-6 different samples and render them many times to get a kick I like so, patience is a virtue!

I hope I have explained things well enough so you all get the picture! I’d be happy to help further if anyone need anymore advice!

could you post an mp3 with that dual kick technique? and maybe mute each channel once to hear what it sounds like alone?

Here it is! The mp3 (320KB) consists of the first two kicks solo and the last four, the two kicks layered together. I have only added a little overdrive and eq! This sample is a pretty basic form of the system I use for creating kicks! I would usually spend a little more time improving to my liking. It maybe sounds like a weird system to any producer but it does work!

I hope this helps

Cheers Steve
