With they way society, education, and parenting are these days, can you really be surprised. Number one, where the f*** are the parents? Instead of taking active, participating, and sharing roles in their childrens lives, they complain at how hard it is to discipline and teach a child. NO SHIT, IT TAKES ACTUAL EFFORT. Number two, the education system seems to find more and more ways of rewarding mediocrity and failure. No no, it's ok Timmy, it's not your fault you're dumb, just go play with the silly-putty. Seems everyone is terribly concerned with child psychology and safety, and whatnot. You know what, kids are kids. They need constant attention, and ESPECIALLY in their pre-teen years must be taught the concept of action and repercussion. I'm not propagating child-abusive behaiviour, but it just seems that the 'good old days' of parenting have gone, only to be replaced by communal mentality tought by schools, as well as any other number of socially accepted, but ineffective methods that ultimately are designed to be EASIER to implement.
