and it's actually not "il preferati" but "le preferati" - and as any red-blooded arian-american (catholic) should know, this is the term used to describe "the chosen ones" - e.g. runners-up for the job of pope. (you'd also know this if you read "angels and demons")...
but in this context it is a superfulous term to describe the bulls, err, I mean the mods.
