Light, good question. First off, let me say that when we're bashing noobs, we're doing it lightheartedly and not in any malicious or nefarious way. To be quite honest, we all started off as noobs, and we all listened to the type of music you mentioned (though Chris Liebing does NOT belong with the rest of those - he's hardcore techno, not trance), so keep that in mind.
Personally, if I don't count my little forays into Sash! style EDM way back in 95 through 98, I can officially say I got into the scene in '99 when I was in Holland. Many say that was THE year for trance, and I agree. Back then, the epic/melodic sound was fresh, the creativity was high, great DJs were coming out with new styles as of yet unheard of. I still listen to all the classics from that year and the year before and after (For an Angel, Greece 2000, Cafe del Mar, Binary Finary's '99 and so on), so I do enjoy that music. However, the MAJOR problem with epic/melodic trance (which is the style you're referring to) is that the sound hasn't evolved since then. It's exactly the same as it was 6-7 years ago. Every track has the same structure, with the same elements incorporated into it. The same synths, the same breakdown/build-up, the same vocals and so forth. Take any epic/melodic track today and listen to some 98-99 stuff, and tell me it's not exactly the same. So, for the "veterans" that have heard this stuff for 2-3 years, it gets old and boring and very un-exciting. Thus the noob comments.
Having said the above, I still listen to a lot of progressive trance. Think (old) Sasha/Digweed style. The Xpander EP (Xpander, Baja, RabbitWeed, Fundamental) is still in my opinion one of the finest pieces of EDM I've ever heard. That style can never get boring because by definition, it progresses into a new sound constantly and continuously evolves, and thus gives the artist much more room for creativity and flair. Some of James Holden's tracks (old and new) come to mind, and I guarantee you no one will call them cheese despite the fact they're classified as "trance".
At any rate, I gurantee you a couple of years from now, when you've had your fill of the above type of trance music and explored other genres, your taste will also evolve into something else (perhaps House, techno or what have you) like it has with most of us, and you'll look back at this and laugh, and take pleasure in bashing the up and coming noobs that OMG at the latest cheese |
That's a pretty good explanation Epi, I thank you for it. You're right, I guess for you veterans of the scene the old sound has just gotten too bloody repetitive. It's true, all these songs go by the same "formula" so to speak, but I guess it still works for me! But I can already see distance forming between the EDM I started with, and where I am now. I fell in love with trance because of Tiesto, I'll admit it! But his tracks are sounding stupider and stupider to me by the day. I guess the amount of cheese you can enjoy just depends how long you've been listening to EDM...lol.
