Social security shouldn't go bankrupt ever, so long as there are contributors to this Ponzi scheme that a private company or person would be jailed for implementing on their own. The problem comes with outsourcing and the continued loss of jobs in America, leaving fewer and fewer opportunities for new contributors. If this continues, then we will certainly have a problem
I would agree that taking the government out of our personal decisions on how we plan for retirement would be a good thing, but there need to be several steps along the way to do it, as there are those who are going to depend on it that simply cannot have it deprived for their upcoming retirement.
I like this plan that calls for a long term, gradual phase out of Social Security:
