imo, who cares if nobody cares. i spin 'cause i love EDM, and unless you're a dynamo with ableton (kudos to jason spanu) or an old-school tape-loop pioneer or somethin', it's pretty hard to perform EDM live short of vinyl and decks. and hey, whoever wants to bash DJs in general that has never seen a true DJ battle can bite me.

the dude's right, in a way though - everyone and their monkey is a dj these days and mostly 'cause everyone thinks it's 'so cool'.

meh... spin for the beats and the breakdown, not for the glory.

exactly...i dont spin for teh tiestor "fame". sure if i got famous it would be badass...i would love to play in big clubs full of people all dancing and having a great time cuz of me. but still...nothing beats playing in a little bar with a capacity of 100 and a 5 dollar cover charge. come to Element everyone!

+1 bro. the DJ is just the medium through which the music is transfered from vinyl to audio and thus to the people. attention-whoring DJs are just plain irresponsible...

Nice post... enjoyed reading that thoroughly... behind the comedy there's definitely some truth...

But I'll tell you this much; I have a real hard time with:

quote:
producer > dj

they were right about one thing. you're spinnin other people's music. get a life.

Dude, Production/Producers are great, and every DJ on the planet who doesn't do at least some production of their owes a tremendous debt to the producers who are so poorly compensated for their work...

But I do definitely try to do more with every production I have than just play it out...

I wish I could find that Sanderr K quote I had in my sig for a while... basically sums my feelings about DJ'ing... It's hard to get people to look past the fact that as a DJ you're playing other peoples records and see the set as a whole, or even each transition/sample/cut/whatever other innovation you can come up with as a piece of art...

Peace, Cheers,

RJT

Without DJs the producers would be nothing.

and while his afticle is funny, it's just so fucking easy, and so cliche for that matter to bust on someone who is more popular than you for something you can't do. Seriously, how many "witty" articles have you read making fun of Band members, preps, abercrombie kids, tv personalities, etc. etc. etc. ???

Great Hip Hop DJ's:

Numark
Cut Chemist
Z-Trip
DJ Shadow

etc.

Just because I felt like hip hop was getting shit on...

Every genre has a ton of ultra bad DJ's... I think it's just more prominent with hip hop b/c it appears to be way easier to get a gig in the states if you play cheesy rap than if you play any kind of dance music...

Yeah... I guess it's hard to classify them one way or another, but I definitely look on those guys as hip hop, they've definitely produced some of the best beats I've ever heard, and Cut Chemist and Numark have done some pretty amazing things when I've seen J5 live...

Another hip hop DJ / producer I really like: Premiere... Gang Starr baby, real hip hop...
