For me, the vocal quality is all about two things.

1. The language of the lyrics
2. How the lyrics are used in the song.

The sad fact (imo) is that many popular trance lyrics sound like they were written by a 14 year old girl. Theyre incredibly sappy, sugary heaps of love and unquestioning surrender that they are hard to take seriosuly. I think this is why many people find it hard to take trance seriously and why vocal trance became the thing to mock...

Secondly, don't just throw some auto-tuned woman's vocals (see Jan Johnston, Justine Suissa) over a song; the vocals should be used as another instrument and mastered as such throughout the song.

Also, I'm not a big fan of held syllables (ex: "I cryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" type vocals) but now Im getting into personal taste....

Vocal Trance should just be called pop music with more synths.... it's mostly cheesy and the sound is boring.
