you know, dems and libs always accuse bush of being a dumbass and stupid, and not intelligent; but when you look at what could have been, it's kinda funny as well.
howard dean is an absolute lunatic.
and all this talk of john kerry being so smart is absolute bullshit. The navy released kerry's records and it showed he had a cumulative average of 76, or C. In fact, he received four D's his freshman year — in geology, political science and two history courses. whoa, what happened to those brains that you guys were depending on.
in addition, the whole, "piece of work" statement is very understandable. if you know multiple languages, which i'm sure a good part of ya'll do, you understand that when trying to translate things directly from one language to another, it becomes difficult to find expressions that are similar to each other. humor is different in different languages; puns can't happen. piece of work is an expression that we use, and i know if you tried to directly translate that into french, it would be "morceau d'travaille", which makes absolutely no sense. it's very likely the prime minister didn't understand what happened.

I don't think people are at Bush because of his problems with translation. The lunacy is that someone who's supposedly a part of international diplomacy, and needs to radiate the basics of thoughtful behaviour, should have been able to check his words before they spilled out of his mouth. And Bush should by now have learned that his "humour" never works out to his advantage in these kinds of situations. It may be highly appreciated when he's campaigning in Redneck County, but unlike the US, foreign countries tend to elect less goofy leaders.
Btw. if news like this is your kind of fun, I highly recommend dubyaspeak.com.

Also, the connotation of "piece of work" isn't real positive in an American context to begin with. When you say someone is a real piece of work, you generally mean they don't have all their eggs in the same basket, if you get my drift.
Also, Kerry released his own records, the Navy doesn't have the authority to release college transcripts. Kerry's freshman year grades were quite awful, mainly due to an attendance problem.
Bush's grades were quite awful as well; mainly due to an intelligence problem.
The Ivy League had a well-known policy at the time known as the "Gentleman's Agreement". The agreement stipulates that wealthy individuals that are ear-marked as having high-donor potential are basically given a free pass through college, guaranteed a 2.0 GPA contingent upon good attendance and discipline. Bush didn't make it, despite supposed good discipline and attendance. Kerry's attendance was bad, negating the Agreement.
And someone please substantiate these claims against Dean. He's been called "crazy" and "stupid", and I've never heard reasons for either (and yelling an enthusiastic YEA in Iowa doesn't count).

Here we all are discussing the intelligence of Bush/Rice/Kerry, and trying to use their college educations as a basis for our points...
Here is what I have to say about that....
I've spent the last 4 and a half years on campus and spend more time socialising than studying. I have come across MANY people from every faculty, and I've learnt a few things from this.
A college/university degree does NOT make you smart!! I have met countless numbers of lawyers, engieneers and the like who are brilliant on paper but are thick as a brick.
anyone can regurgitate a text book, if you read it enough times.. It doesnt mean that you learn anything, or that you're smart. All it means is that you're determined and willing to stick at your work.
Bush is thick as a brick who probably had to work his sorry arse off for a mere passing grade in college. Kerry was lazy about attendence but still came on par with Bush. Rice, on the other hand, is also a fairly intelligent republican. It's not her intelligence that is in question, it is her personal motives that seem to give her the image of a nutjob rightist. But at the end of all this, there is NO defending Bush's intelligence.. the guy is a moron, end of story.
