It would also help you identify your favorite 'sound' as trance from diff 'eras' kinda sound a little different.

When i first started there were tons of songs I liked when record shopping, and was buying great tracks, but they were all pretty different in style. Deciding which direction I wanted to go made things a lot easier in future purchases. But I figure, dont limit yourself whatever you buy, eventually you'll have a little bit of everything and it'll just be better in the longrun.

Make sure you include tunes that you like in your discogs Wantlist so that you don't forget about them!!!!

Discogs is a great way to keep track of all the tunes that you want to buy.

My Wantlist is up to about 200 i think and that's only a drop in the ocean......

I've never gotten into discogs, but I think i'm at the point where I should. I've got about half a spiral notebook of tunes I want to get, and discogs would probably be a little easier to organize.

In the end, just get what you like. Every so often take and hour or three to check out the new tracks comin out.

i buy maybe 5 vinyls a mth and the rest being those from legal download sites.

and i play a mixture, i see what goes with the flow and i'll stick the track in. though of course i sometimes throw in some old classics to get the crowd go crazy...

Moreover, if you're just getting into trance, how do you even catch up by getting to know all the stuff that has been releases over the past few years? If I had to make a tracklist now I wouln't even begin to know where to start. Sure I could pick 12-15 songs i like, but how do you know if its a good mix of new and old? It just seems a little much at times.

It is a HUGE part of DJing. You can really get out of date fast if you let one or two weeks go by without checking up on the new releases. Great thing is, is most of these record shops have samples online, so that helps out. Also, all of the digital download sites like beatport, playittonight, and dancetunes have samples of the toons also. So that makes it alot easier. But like someother people said, I will buy a tune regardless of how old it is, if it is good. And ya wanna know my reasons for that. Ok, I'll tell you.
One, is because it is a good tune. Two, I love to support talented artists. Three, there is a HUGE chance that while you are spinning a set someone out there may of never heard that tune before. So what if all of us DJ's let all those slammin old tunes go by? Well, chances are that person will never ever get a chance to hear it. I use to think this DJ thing was all about me, but I was wrong. I am learning it is about other people. Trying to turn someone onto EDM that has never heard it before. Or playing that tune at the right time for someone when they can relate it to something that is going on in their life. Thats how I got turned onto and fell in love with it. So, my point is purchase tunes old, new or whatever based on the quility of the tune. Don't focus so much about getting out of date. I would still try to keep up on the new releases, but look at alot of the older releases too. You may find a treasure.

Rock On,

Mike
