Ignorance and peer pressure. It's no big secret that most people don't have the slightest idea what trance is. And for those who do - well it's the "cool" thing now to hate trance.

Some of the people I know like trance, some don't. At the end of the day people like what they like and if some people can't accept others' tastes then they're not worth the time of day imo.

a couple of years ago I could say "i like trance" without people taking notice. now I rather dont want to say that I like trance because of the orgy of cheese the trance scene has become. If you tell someone you like trance they will reply "oh you like Tiesto and Armin and that cheese?"

Dont want to be associated with those guys :Q

Most of the time when people ask me what music I like to hear, I say Electronic Music (and then say Trance, House...for example)..and I get those annoying "how can you stand the boom boom boom" question or "it ain't real music, computer makes it, I can make it" sentence...

I just laugh to myself and keep on, but nowadays people became more tolerante to EDM, cus of the cheese orgy Rebel9 mentioned earlier...

I tell them I like it, then try to skip to another subject quickly because I know one ignorant person is going to say 'oh, me too, have you heard the new DJ Sammy song?'. I don't mind talking about it, I just hate talking to someone who thinks they know about it and don't have a clue.

Most people here listen to RnB or emo or something.

Dance music here has a pretty bad reputation for being 'ned music' (neds being the people who dress in tracksuits, drink on the streets, pick fights and generally cause trouble.) They mostly listen to cheese, happy hardcore etc, so as a result most people associate any kind of upbeat electronic music with them.

So when I tell people I like trance they're maybe surprised because I don't seem the ned, or even clubber, type straight away, or they just say something like "trance is shite" or "all that dance music sounds the same".

I wouldn't say I'm embarassed by it, I'm proud enough to go around listening to trance. I just think it has a bad reputation here, and most people just listen to what's shoved down their throats or popular at the moment (the latter point is probably true in pretty much any area, but still)

I have to say, yes, i am a bit embarassed about that, because trance is considered to be the cheese of EDM.

now i usually say i listen to techno and house, and sometimes trance.

Hello! Trance scene in US?

Hi, Neph here, just wanted to respond to origional poster's question..

Yes, there are parts of the US of A that do have active trance scenes, with actual people that actually appreciate and spin 'trance' records. Whatever those are. The San Francisco (soon to be officially the San Jose..) Bay Area has had a flourishing trance scene since the beginning.. Plenty of record shops like Skills & Spundae carry all the latest and greatest. It's because of the people I assume. The Bay is a cultural mecca, its hard to think of a creed, culture, or style that isn't represented here.

From what I understand, the scene is still active in LA as well, although not to as much a degree. Someone from down south can confirm or deny this for me..

Hell, I myself have been distancing myself from what I though of as 'trance' a few years ago.. It's not so much that i don't appreciate it anymore, more-so that I just would like to diversify my record collection. I really like avenues artists such as Technasia, Mauro Picotto, Dave Clarke, Dj Hell, Johannes Heil, & Chris Liebing has moved towards in rescent years. Its a breath of fresh air, when compared to the staleness i get from listening to the latest 'trance' releases (as indicated by the on-line record shops buttons)

Live free, or don't; it's entirely up to you.

Neph, el Brujo

There have been a couple of occasions when ive been at some "trendy" bar thats playing the house de jour just talking with some aquiatances and it comes up that i like to dj blah blah blah i always hate saying i play trance in these occasions cuz i get the same response every time "oh......oh right " so there are times when ill just say i play prog and breaks, but other than that its pretty well tolerated in the uk.
