I have had the procedure done a number of times for all my wisdom teeth and 2 of my canines. You will feel ok for a lil while right after because the numbing agent will still be working. The dentist may give you some pain medication for afterwards. It will hurt the most the next day on the night right after. Eat soft foods and avoid eating anything that may irritate the gum. Wash your mouth out with mouthwash or salt water to prevent infection and of you smoke make sure you wash your mouth afterwards EVERY time. The following day you will feel 50% pain reduction and even less the day after. It stop hurting completely in 3-4 days. You may feel slight discomfort but no pain. Open wounds in your mouth heal very fast because it is always moist. Just make sure you keep it clean.

Ive had 7 teeth pulled under 2 sedations. I got an injection on my inside elbow, and was out within a matter of seconds.

On the first sedation I was out for the count and don't remember a thing. The second time I was awake sometimes, but didnt care at all what was going on. Pretty amazing really considering when I wasn't sedated I couldn't even open my mouth for a dentist I was so paralysed with fear. Under sedation, a dentist could chop your leg off and you wouldn't care. Just make sure you take someone with you to lead you out when you are finished - I was staggering about like a drunk and spitting blood on the street.

The pain afterwards is nothing severe. It's bearable because it's a pain that you know is going to subside, unlike the pain of an abcess which keeps coming back and getting worse each time. Stock up on soft foods (yoghurt, weetabix e.t.c.). You'll have big holes where the roots used to be, but in time that will heal and the holes will fill up with bone. Even though I've got 7 gaps I have no problem with chewing - I can eat whatever i want.

As for the lump, it could be an abcess, but it's unlikely if it only hurts slightly as the pain of an abcess is severe. It gets sore, then goes away, then comes back worse, and so on until one day the infection swells up and you look like a hamster. If you've reached that stage, you'll know about it - the pain is truly unbearable.

To relieve toothache, painkillers are the obvious choice (ibroprofen is good for toothache). A hot water bottle is a life saver - put it inside your pillow and lie with the sore side down on to it. This is one of the best pain relievers of toothache, and doesnt involve drugs. Also try clove oil - cheap and effective but burns your tongue and smells horrible. Alcohol spirits (e.g. neat vodka) also work - a small mouthful on the sore area will reduce pain - you don't need to swallow it (though I usually did but I was in a state of desperate pain before I got them pulled).

omg that reminds me of the time I'd been popping a cocktail of paracetemol, aspirin and ibroprofen for about 3 days to numb the pain of 4 abcesses in my mouth, then took the prescription painkillers that a mate gave me. I slept for 15 hours then had an out of body experience when i woke up where I was floating up on the ceiling and looking down on myself lying on the bed. That scared me in to sorting it out :nervous

anaesthetic? They don't always work that well in my experience, you still have the gore factor under a local and in any case it still hurts after the anaesthetic has worn off.

About 1/4 or less of all wisdom teeth getting pulled. Wisdom teeth are generally cut out. Molars are merely popped out. No big deal, have had more than a few popped. Incisor extractions suck. If you play your cards right, you can get it yanked and go right to lunch, but don't expect to handle soup 'cause your lips would be too numbed up and shit. I've had teeth absessed and hurting so bad I used pliers to yank 'em out, so a regler extraction is a piece of cake my friend...
