MWNN is classic. Excellent stuff!! He was a real pioneer of that sound along with Astral Projection.

As fas as scales go, he is probably using phrygian modes. Most goa and psy uses this. Its what gives it that slightly off key feel to it.

It think he's just using portamento (glide) to get that sliding sound in the bassline. Most VSTs these days have it. Just have two notes playing at the same time, one sortly after the other and play with the portamento knob and you'll get a feel for it.

Upon closer inspection, I think a key part of his feel is the vital use of atmospheres that are not pads. In vavoom it's the riff that the track starts and ends with. By starting with those non-pad atmospheres and keeping them a major theme underneath, the ambience of the entire rest of the track is transformed into something different... even when the intro/outro riff isn't playing. Sweeet...
