A Guy Called Gerald once said "People tend to buy more and more equipment when they don't know what they want from their music."

The same applies for arrangement. What do you want in your music?

No, I wouldn't call it unethical by definition, but it certainly isn't a good idea. If a pre-existing arrangement happens to fit your track perfectly, it's more than likely other areas of your track suffer from the same lack of originality. Unoriginality is contagious within the different areas of your own mind.

edit: and yes, it's annoying to hear a new track with an obviously identical arrangement to a previous one. Even if it's somewhat close it bugs me. (Energy 52 - Cafe del Mar (three n' one mix) and Zed-X - The Storm, much?)

yeah i kind of agree.... not everybody's arangement works for you... and i've had to go back and edit the arrangement, not because of lack of originality, but because it just doesn't sound right with the melodies or sequence I had.

So If you use a reference to arrange, and then go back and make sure it sounds good with your idea, shouldn't it be good? I mean I would think that the only thing that matters is the final outcome's sound.

I mean you guys catch that because you're producers, arrangers, musicians, but as far as the average listener is concerned? Does having the same arrangement as a previous track they liked help them enjoy your track more? So far I've noticed that it does... it must be some sort of psychological thing... people want to know what's gonna happen next.

I'm not trying to argue with anybody... I'm very curious about this.. and want to know if it's a good idea to continue doing, or a bad one.

I mean I can come up with anything... melodies... harmonies... rhythms... but when it comes to arrangement... i'm just about the worst... Am I the only one that suffers from crap arrangism? My old stuff got criticized for being the same canned arrangement. My new stuff gets criticzed for being someone else's arrangement, btu then again this criticisms don't occur often... usually rare someone notices... someone with a very good ear.

Look at it like using instruments. If you use a piano in a trance track, are you copying robert miles? Not at all. Of course, it's always better and more original to invent your own instrument, but if you can only get one that sounds bad, why not just use that good old piano?

okay thanks for the reassurance... I guess I'll keep doing what I do... align arrangements and then change them to fit the track... I mean I'm sure every producer has their weakness and they need help from another track to balance it out.

A lot of times no one will notice since the arrangement has been changed so much from the original reference... because like I said earlier not everyone's structure works for your track, but some arrangements I leave unchanged... good ear people catch it.

Well what the hell are you trying to acheive with your music? Gain the respect of the 'average' masses through your otherly-person arranged music? Sorry for the minor attack if your post came off in a way you didn't mean for it to.

not really.. it's just my weak point is arranging and need help that's all... i'm just noting observations... I'm not trying to dominate the masses or nothing... sorry if my post came off as cocky or arrogant.

Well, I'm pretty confident in saying copying other tracks isn't helping - it's going the other way. Look up at the depth of the hole you've just fallen into now. With each successive arrangement you copy, the floor of your hole goes down another ten feet, and it's gonna take a longer rope to get out.

LMAO!!

Why not give something other than trance a shot. Electro and techno have some very interesting structures that are completely unconventional. Trying to re-arrange the structure and still keep it as trance... I dunno. Its all been done that way for a reason. Its good that you want to try some other things, but you might find its pretty easy to break the trance machine one you step outside of its little structure box. Ever tried going straight to a big cheese melody without a buildup... it sounds pretty much like bad euro cheese.

Oo why didn't I think of that. Good idea. That could be the perfect first step towards getting off the crack that is copying arrangements.
