I saw the show (not live there tho) and i can say you are talking about the "Laser Harp", of which first version was made in 1981 and x amount of new models have been created since then. It isn't really a synth but more like a note on/off controller. Every time you strike the beam (note on) or remove your hand from the beam (note off) a message is sent to the synth the controller is connected to. Protective gloves are needed to prevent your hands from getting burned tho. Some info about the original "Laser Harp" and it's successor(s) can be found HERE

Yeah, old music is surprising sometimes. Like some of Dick Raaijmakers' work for Phillips from the late 50's and early 60's. For example, Song Of The Second Moon (1957)...I didn't know there was an electronic groove like that back then. Badings, Dissevelt, Parmegiani, Dockstader, and Oskar Sala as well. It's all the ancient ancestor of ambient and in some cases what sounds like IDM. What they used to make the music was things like oscillators, giant custom one of a kind synthesizers built personally or by a large company, and tape reels.

JMJ is truly a great producer, fortunately i have oxygene 8 on vinyl with 4 remixes i havent heard most of the other oxygenes though

Yes, Jean Michel Jarre is a legend and probably the best innovator in electronic music. As a very young kid back in the Soviet Union I first heard his music, and along with my synth-pop and other electronic favourites at the time propelled me permanently into electronic music.

I own most of his work, and Oxygene 4 is my fav

He's brilliant, his music is absolute euphoria. I like the remixes too, like the Mat Silver vs. Tony Burt Remix of Equinox. Have this on vinyl and MP3 and it's got so much energy, kind of hard. I would go so far as to so (your free to disagree) that trance music (especially the melodic, instrumental variety) is more influenced by Jean Michel Jarre (and Georgio Moroder, like his solo, instrumental works) than by Detroit Techno or House music. Thats just the way I see it...

oxygene 4 is definitely my fav. i love to drive late at night with it blasting hahaha
