sorry.. But id still vote against the dynamic stage mics for studio work. The reason is the freq response.. and the dynamic range ofcourse.

I used to do that. For instance, theres no point in trying to bring out the higher frequensies from a sound recorded with a poor mic when there just isnt anything to boost.. and so the sound is destined to be a bit dark and muffled. There are large diaphragm condenser mics available for that price. No point buying the SM58, unless it's used for live stuff (which is not the case here).

Agree with the comments on the sm58 - don't use it unless it's intended for live gigs.

The Shure SM57 and SM58 are basically the same mic. They're better for close mic situations. Condensers are better for capturing the delicate air pressure changes in an acoustic environment.

If your room sucks acoustically, going with a dynamic and close micing would probably be a better choice. This way the reflections off of your sucky room don't get too in the way.

Sink the most money into the preamp. Any competent individual that claims to know anything about recording knows that. You could have a great pre, and a somewhat low valued mic and it could still sound very nice. Trent Reznor uses an SM58 for his vocals, but he's running through a Great River preamp that costs about $2000.

It depends what you're recording as to what type of mic is the better choice. It's more about the talent going into the mic than anything else. Well, that and acoustics.
