He does rock! His name is Deep Roy. You may remember him as Mr. SoggyBottom from Big Fish.

I was very excited to see this movie as well but was rather disappointed by what I saw. I too loved the orginal and the eccentric Gene Wilder and was very curious on what Burton and Depp would make of the new Willy Wonka. I don't see the biggest problem of the film being Johnny Depp's inablilty to mimic the eccentricity of Gene Wilder or that he was just trying to hard in the role. I think he did a pretty good job as a modern version of Wonka but I think his character would have been more fitting if it hadn't been thrown against a slick pretty hollywood production with too many flash backs. His character was over the top and somewhat dark (which I expected from Tim Burton) but the movie was typical hollywood bells and whistles with flash back story lines blah blah blah (nothing like what I expected from Tim Burton) The Oompa Loopas in their modern day space suits were unbearable to watch IMO and even more difficult to listen too (you could barely even understand what they were singing in half of the songs). I suppose this was meant to be a modern adaptation of the film so I should have expected hollywood to be pull it apart and just enjoy it for what it is ...a fun movie that is pretty to look at.
