This totally depends on the quality of your mixdown. If your mixdown is crap it will take a shitload of work to master the track right (Or more likely: the master will suck too!).
In the master's I've received of my tracks the difference was very little though...

This is what I mean.

It seems to be, if you've done a descent mixdown then you probably will hardly notice the difference, because it was mixed right.

OR

If it's mixed badly, you probably won't notice the difference because the mixdown was that bad.

When do you notice the diference?

Online Mastering and Vengeance Mastering do look very neat to me, quite a decent price as well for their efforts.

With online mastering, you get a free preview of how the final product will sound like, so you can always choose whether or not to continue with them before having to pay. Nice service!

I often wonder though whether all this money is worth it, before the track is even signed. Labels often do take care of the track's mastering themselves. Unless you'd be wanting to franchise your very own unsigned tracks and sell them of course, then I'd fully understand the meaning of it (like for example Alphazone does with their Skywarp label).
