ive had it.. from listening on my headphones for too long.. it went away from a couple of days though.. but a (beeeeeeep) in my right ear, wasnt any cool..

now that i have bought new monitors, which really shows me what Hi-frequencies are, i know im gonna get it again..

but it is, actually possible that it dissapears..

you dont have tinnitus. tinnitus is a permanent, chronic high pitched sound in the ear and it doesnt disappear (it can go away for a bit then come back. but if you got the condition, you got it for the rest of your life). its also confused with pretty much every other ear disorder that results in ringing. best bet: go see a doctor if it worries you. there are treatments which you can get that reduce the ringing sound if it really annoys you although they require you to wear a hearing aide type thing on your ear (it emits a constant low level noise which goes some way to mask out the constant high frequency sound of the tinnitus itself - works like dithering)

that said if you get into bad producing habits you can get it pretty easily if you neglect to look after your ears. if you have tinnitus you really seriously abuse your ears though the loudest live event i ever heard was dillinja and the valve sound rig and even with ear plugs my ears were ringing for about 3 days afterwards. on the first day i was practically deaf. it faded though and after 5 or so days my hearing was back to normal. no ringing.

you can get tinnitus instantly from huge explosions and the like. but there are laws that restrict the amplitude of high frequency sound at all venues that broadcast music. for people that dont fire guns alot and get caught in bomb blasts then tinitus is something you develop from prolonged exposure to harmful levels of high and mid range frequencies. but you can get it pretty quickly if you are flippant with your music making gear and like having all volume controls on maximum.

couple of stuff to prevent yourself getting tinnitus:

1) make a habit of turning all master volume rotaries/sliders down to zero when you finish using your gear. when you switch everything back on, switch on amp/speakers last and gradually increase the volume till its audible. then adjust to a good monitoring level. my virus b emits a huge boom when i switch it on with an amp. its not so bad for my ears at monitoring levels cuz its mostly bass but plosives will destroy your speakers too. theres a very good reason why there is an order in which you switch on your gear. i set the master level of my soundcard to zero after use and keep the rotary master level on my virus b down pretty low. the volume on my amp goes down low too.

when i switch everything on the soundcard mixer level goes up till its peaking close to 0 dB when playing a stock sound in fl studio. virus b goes on (volume on zero). then amp goes on. increase virus volume to half way. increase amp volume to monitoring level. thats like 30 seconds before and after i get to producing. good habit to get into. you dont want to wake up, forget that everything is maxed out on 10 then press play in cubase and blow your house down.

2) when using overdrive/distortion plugins/units/pedals take a note of the master level and decrease it quite alot. then add the overdrive. its too easy to get comfortable monitoring at a really loud level then add a plugin like debaser (has some monstrously loud presets) which will mash your ears. transients (sudden, sharp increases in the level of a sound) also mashes your speakers.

3) in wave editting programs like sound forge you can select a part of the waveform and play back only the selected part. for short stabbing/plucking sounds in particular, make a note of the level if its already pretty loud and reduce it alot when you do end up doing this in sound forge. editting kick drums has blitzed my ears before because i sometimes forget about this and start editting the beginning (click) part of the kick drum. which is all massive amounts of lower and upper mid range. very loud telephone bZZZZZZZZ when selected and played on its own.

4) any form of microphone/guitar/distortion feedback, if loud enough will DESTROYYYY your ears and your speakers. switch everything on in the right order and do a little sound test at low level first then increase the volume till its comfortable.

this should all be common sense really. as a general rule when you are going out, its the club/venue's legal responsibility to limit the amplitude of high/mid frequency they put out. if not (like in dillinja) they should issue you with earplugs for free. some cowboy venues wont though. so bring a pair of your own if you are paranoid about it.

Yes, I just had that one for 2 times (distorsion, compression), lasted about 3 days each. It just came, I haven't listen to any loud music or so, I just wake up with it. Glad it's not constantly!

Derivative: Everyone should do like you're writing, but mmost people don't, and when they got tinitus they regret not doing it.

If you have a tiny beep that last for about 10 secs or so, it's not tinitus at all. Mostly - so I heard - it's just cells in your ear dying and refreshing. I rarely have this, though it's not tinitus at all.
