Theres so many genres of Psy now that its pretty much a genre in itself. Psy Trance, Psy Dub, Psy Tek/Prog are all well established in the Psy scene. I've even heard they are making Psy Breaks now.
When I was first getting into it, I thought there were some similarities, but the deeper I look, the less it seems like the Trance scene. In general, the hardcore fans/producers try very hard to distance itself from the Trance scene as a whole.
It did start in India during the heights of the Goa Trance movement which did get some attention from Oakenfold for a while. This was about as close as the two scenes came to being one. Most of the good stuff today comes from Israel although its very much a worldwide movement. Japan, Mexico and Sweden produce a lot of the music too although you'll find stuff coming out of pretty much any corner of the world with electricity.
Its much more based around live acts too. There are few supertar DJs in the scene and its mainly an outdoors festival based scene as opposed to clubs. Its basically the alternative trance scene. Get into it.
