Sorry to say "trancaholic" (or should I say Alcoholic?) but the topic is about mainstream - underground. And if there's one country in the whole world where trance would be mainstream music, that would be Holland. The reason: trance is extremely popular here, more popular than in Berlin or in Ibiza (man, how did you come up with that one!?!?!)

It's true that my "trance-icons" (as you call it) are not the innovators of trance.. but did I ever say that?????

I wouldn't call Alice Deejay trance, but the Vengaboys?????????? you must be kidding!!!

Well, who are in your eyes the innovators for this genre? if you want to know my opinion about it, I recently posted a message at the Europe vs. US topic about it....

Mainstream vs. Underground is something that comes up alot for me...

I goto a highschool (blah blah), and often I will bring a discman with a CDRW disc that I burn new and "underground" electronic music which i listen to alot (it can range from house, techno, trance, whatever.)... I let quite a few classmates listen to my discman (as alot ask me WTF im listening to when they heard a lead synth or a repetitive "unsa unsa" beat screaming from the headphones :P)

And these are the typical reactions I get to my "underground" tunes (underground, for me meaning mostly electronic music few ever hear of..):

-Those who think the "beats are great!" (this happens mostly with those who like going to clubs/raves). Usually thier first thign said is "What kinda music is this??" or "What's this called?" in a positive way... these people are alright

-people who like and know about electronic music, and can clearly pick out which tracks/genres they like and dont like without being an ass and saying "gino beats suck!" while they skip throughout the whole CD. these people are alright too.

-People who like some of the stuff, but hate it when the songs get longer than 3 minutes (screw radio edits!)

-Rock/hiphop/r&b/rap music fans who think electronic music has no feeling.

-hiphop/rap fans who think electronic music is crap because "you cannot dance/groove to it"... (???).

-People who listen to only trance/electronic music that is in mainstream (like Darude, AliceDeejay, etc- like someone said above), and cry "I cant stand this shit... it has no words.. its just a person on a keybaord banging crap out." (those were exact words by one dumb person, actually.)

-People who think only popular/mainstream music is good, and the music I listen to is crap. These people dont know much about music, IMHO.

-Morons who call my music "Gino Beats" (a term i find very offensive in characterizing electronic music). Those in Toronto probably know what im talking about with the whole gino beat thing.... not everyone uses the term "gino beats" in an offensive way tho...

ok im done now... once again these are typical reactions i get to the "underground" music I listen to and search for alot.... sorry if half of the stuff i wrote was irrelavent to this topic... lol

(now, i wait for some dude to criticize my long ass post!)

I just wanna say that I'm the only one who listens to this music among my friends and they totally respecet it, they just don't like it.. as for the gino thing, I hate gino beats such shit ass music thats like really really really shitty garage if u can call it that whatever.. I just wanna say that ginos's are cool too peeps label me as a gina but so what!!! what I hate the most is the labels we have for peepz, I mean I've been into this music for a long while now but some loser "raver" who went to his first party yesterday is gonna say shit about me cuz his pants are "phatter" than mine!! fuck you snobby ravers!!!

I guess most people listen to britney and all that mainstream pop-crap coz they don't have a chance to listen to some different genres etc. (yeah, blame the popular radio stations for that). Same thing with your trance song favs; you can name only the songs you know even if there were much better ones out there. Anyway, I don't really care if trance is becoming mainstream or not as long as I get my hands on new tunes and it doesn't start to become to commercial and manipulated by big players who just drool for money. I wonder when someone decides to mix britneys vocals with some trance tune to make a hit haha.

Anyway, it's all about the music, good vibes and unity. Let's not point fingers at people who don't like some genre or look down to them since they dig some tunes we don't. Peace.

well said mindbender, as long as you stay true to the music you like it's all good.. believe it or not there's a lot of people out there in the dance culture media and electronic music listening peeps who say that trance is mainstream... I just hope that we won't stop listening to it because of what they say... I agree trance will progress because we won't listen to the same thing over and over again but it will still live on!!!

I read a great quote the other day:

mainstream vs underground can be applied here. Just because something is (or becomes) mainstream, doesn't mean it sux. Eg Darude's Sandstorm, Storm's Time to Burn and all of ATB's stuff is essentially mainstream now. Granted we don't have a 24hr dance radio station in Adelaide, but the part time station we do have plays a helluva variety of music. The songs listed above will likely feature in the more commercial/"mainstream" drive-time show but they will also be in the more "underground" insomnia sets at around 4am Fri mornings! The cynical view that when something becomes mainstream or liked by a lot of people, it becomes crap, makes these "underground" fans as bad as the people who like the thing because it IS popular! These people do not value their own opinions or the music.

If you like a track - enjoy it with or without everyone else! The track is still the same!

It is frustrating when some songs don't get the respect they deserve, but at least that means WE get to enjoy them, and as such we have that special advantage over the sheep...

I like to have fun with people that don't like electronic music. When my friends who don't like trance ride in my car, I make sure to turn the CD up so they have to listen to it. Of course these are hippies that make me listen to James Taylor, Grateful Dead and (don't ask) Niel Diamond. For that I think they deserve it.

K guys, nice topic this is, but ehm, I just have to mingle with the discussion Jukx and Trancaholic were having, just a little.

First of all, trancaholic, Jukx said no. 1 trance COUNTRY. Which leaves out Berlin and Ibiza, because they're no countries (duh).

Next, trancaholic is calling the Dutch (ie Ferry Corsten, Tiësto, Armin, Piet Bervoets, Benno de Goeij, Klubbheadz, etc. etc.) "not innovating"... Damn, who do you think created the DUTCH sound??

Also, drugs don't have nothin'to do with trance, are you the type that can only have fun when on drugs?

I have to admit however, that no one can take credit for the "birht" of trance. But why should we? In my opinion, nothing can make people from different countries unite better than a supurb tranceparty. Talking about trance parties... You guys all oughta visit Holland some time, we've got the BEST trance parties in the whole wide world. (If you don't believe it, check this site's live mix section once in a while)

Theres no need to be all elitist and proud that we're more 'underground' than all the robots that listen to pop radio stations all the time.
I've gotten my share of odd looks from people on the street while I carry my Nomad Jukebox cranking out tunes at the highest of volumes.
When I go to work (at a swimming pool), I make a point of stocking up the cd changer with cds I bring from home. Half of it is vocal trance, and imho it's the best way to convert pop fans into trance fans. I get a lot of people coming up to me and asking me where i got the tunes. So I get on my little soapbox and preach.
It's all about demystifying the tasty trance goodness, so the general mainstream public can understand it.

btw I love Armin, Corsten, and Tiësto, and there was i think 1(one) Vengaboys song that I would classify trance. But gosh darn i dont remember.
