i did a thread on this in another forum ages ago....something like
A DJ needs to do 4 things:
1) technical ability - being able to use the equipment. anything to do with making the sound - beatmatching, scratching, etc.
2) aquiring the records - knowing where to get the music you want to play.
3) imagination - putting something unique into every set, so it's not just "playing other peoples records". related to 1)
4) possibly most important - READING THE CROWD. knowing when to speedup, slowdown, change style, build the energy up, keep the energy up, and when to do what every person in the world can do - play the TUNE and make the crowd go ballistic.
cuz anyone can play cern - the message. building the crowd up for half an hour, then blowing the roof off by playing cern, is different. 
then there's producing.
