dude sorry i read your post and saw the names of the store you mentioned and thought you were looking for records. DJ stores in san fran are, that sell official pioneer products:

Guitar Center

Leo's Pro Audio

World of Stereo (kind of sketchy cause its next to the strip clubs and the owners don't know much about their product but it is an official store and you can barter prices i got hp-700 headphones and two stanton turntables(str8-80's) with trackmaster 2 cartridges for 500 dollars).

Tandem Financial Inc. (according to pioneer official website)

I spose for learning to mix from scratch it would be easier having the same, but in the long run, having two different style platters might be advantageous, since he'll learn to use two types of cd decks, and won't get too used to one type.

Is it worth learning to scratch and do this combination of CDJs or should I just stick with 2x CDJ200s and stick to trance/house/prog type of music.

What kind of mixer do you guys recommend/suggest besides the 707.

Some reassurance and direction would be helpful as DJing is a large investment. I am looking for a setup that is good enough quality, and will give room for improvement, while getting the most for your money. Thank you for your input and suggestions.

-CDJ 200 ($400)
-CDJ 800 ($600)
-DJM 707 ($280) or similar style
-HDJ 1000 ($150) or similar style

Get two 200s.You wont even have to upgrade
If you learn to use your ears you will benefit from the 0,2 resolution.
If you make demos ect you want to be as spot on as possible
if you know what I mean.
If you are interested in learning to scratch
or/and want access to vinyl
save up for a used technics turntable.

Heres a setup for your budget.
2 cdj200 for 750$ new ebay
(incredible pitch resolution, supports mp3
you wont even feel like you have to upgrade.

1 numark digital mixer.99-140$ new
(massive 110 signal to noise ratio ,Its only 48.000 not 96.000
but since you are focused on cds, cds go up to 48.000
good starter mixer in my opinion.
Or the analog 3 chanel stanton 401(massive 110 signal to noise ratio /different crossfader curves/
effects send return/kills for 140$ (It use to list 350-400 but the new line came out)

One used technics sl-1200 mk2 with stanton 500 cartridge
(250-280) on ebay.
Access to vinyl,This is still the industry standard.

You dont need the top of the line hd1000 headphones unless you will be playing out
and if you are get the seinnheiser they are better at loud volumes.
But for your bedroom a 50-60 $ full range pair will do just fine.

Hope this helps.

Thanx for the replies guys, I really appreciate it. I will check out the 200s and 800s when I go to SF next weekend.

It seems close to a toss up. Since on one hand having 2x 800s will make it easier in the long run, in terms of functionality and scratching, and overall use. But the combo CDJs could work too, and save me money. I will have to check them out and think about it some more.

I say get two CDJ 800s. The platter on the CDJ 200 is much different..really small, and it's set up is a little different than their digital vinyl decks like the 800/1000 MK2. If your going just CDJ, get the 800 or better yet save up like I did for the 1000 MK2. If your going to add some CD players to your set up, mostly spin vinyl and don't have the money for the top of the line ones, get the CDJ 200. Otherwise, it's better to save up for ones that are better so you don't have to (or want to) upgrade in the future.
