Edwards airforce base is a big stip of nothing in the middle of the desert thats why the alternates are in the middle of nowhere
Originally tapped as the prime shuttle landing site, Edwards Air Force Base is fully equipped with the necessary hardware and support crews to not only safeguard an orbiter after the wheels stop, but also turn it around shipment back to KSC
There are 45 sites around the world prepared for an Emergency landing , but only Edwards is considered the primary alternate |
Not to mention the facilities to rehabilitate the astronauts after several weeks in a microgravity environment. The effects of space travel on the human physiology are quite extensive. From the skeletal system to the nervous and cardiovascular system, without proper acclimatisation after their return to Earth, the astronauts would not survive. They cannot travel large distances and have to be quarantined. This also requires special facilities.
Landing sites include (emergency and otherwise) Bangor, Maine, Wilmington, North Carolina, MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, NAS Oceana, Wallops Flight Facility, Dover Air Force Base, Atlantic City, New Jersey, Gabreski, New York, Otis ANGB, Pease International, (all USA), Halifax, Stephenville, St John's, Gander and Goose Bay, (all Canada), Lajes, Beja, (both Portugal), Keflavik (Iceland), Shannon International Airport (Ireland), RAF Fairford (UK), Köln Bonn Airport (Germany), Ankara (Turkey), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Diego Garcia (British Indian Ocean Territory). Past sites have included Kano, Nigeria, Easter Island (for Vandenberg launches), and Rota, Spain.
