To my experience (this isn't law of course), you can also 'pre-compress' your kick if you aren't planning on using much compression in your own mix. This way the kick will still sound thumpy, yet doesn't sit that compressed in your whole mix so it will not sound overcompressed as a whole. You can still use some minor compression to make the kick compete with the bassline, though not overpower it to make it punchy enough. Call it a 'disguised compression'
