There's a post by L-Vee on trance.nu somewhere about making your own kickdrums, try looking that up. Quite useful I might add!

Hi guys!

I have finally found time to show you how I create those Alphazone style kicks.

When I e-mailed Alphazone @ Skynet they did reply but didn't really give me anything to work from. I have since persisted in finding my own method of programming them. Although they are not exact replica's I feel they are damn close.

I will guide you all through explaining each different step, rendering the sample so you can hear the progression/development of the sample to the end product. Please download this file, hopefully you can listen and follow (further links at the bottom).

Stage one: Shows a normal kick sample from my library (how I created this is another tutorial).

Stage two: Shows a snare sample that I will use in conjuction with the original kick sample to give it a higher frequency.

Stage three: Shows the snare and kick samples combined.

Stage four: At this point I have used an overdrive effect (blood overdrive in FL) on the channel.

Stage five: Shows a reverb effect on the channel, making sure you have set a predelay of about 175ms.

Stage six: Shows the sample being overdriven in an external wave editor (I used Nero Wave Editor).

Stage seven: Shows the sample being rendered with the original kick back at stage one. This is due to the punchiness being lost by using the above effects (works for me anyway).

Stage eight: Shows stage seven rendered sample overdriven (Blood Overdrive) again.

Stage nine: Shows a filter applied to the channel with the cutoff slightly closed to take away the really high 'tiss' sound.

Stage ten: Final eqing and editing. I tend not to compress the sample bacause this should be done in your mix.

The final result will differ if you use a different sample from the start. The effects can all be altered to suit to either make the kick harder or softer. These samples are purely shown for example purposes.

This method does seem long, laborious and may have its critics but it works for me and hopefully now for you!

I welcome any further question and if I can help I will be happy to do so.

Cheers Steve

Sounds like a very nice tutorial, thanks alot for the effort buddy!!

To my experience (this isn't law of course), you can also 'pre-compress' your kick if you aren't planning on using much compression in your own mix. This way the kick will still sound thumpy, yet doesn't sit that compressed in your whole mix so it will not sound overcompressed as a whole. You can still use some minor compression to make the kick compete with the bassline, though not overpower it to make it punchy enough. Call it a 'disguised compression'

Here's Steve's tutorial hosted if yousendit should expire:

Cheers,
Wim
