Whether you use the most basic breaks pattern or the most complicated one, producing breaks is all about the samples you use. Pay special attention to (first, getting phat, high quality perc samples) length of your drum hits, and always make sure you leave some space (silence) behind and between the hits of each instrument. Through hearing silence vs. full volume, the dynamic range presents the illusion of more energy/loudness. Compression is a big plus - listen to how compressed the beat in Brancaccio & Aisher - Darker (reset the breaks) mix is. Listen to how loud the hi hats become during spaces between the kicks. It gives a nice thump. Then check out how crisp certain breaks can be - even simple ones like in Vengaboys - Paradise. Then, listen to how original you can get by listening to the classic Out of Body Experience by Rabbit in the Moon. Those are some tasty breaks. When making breaks, I'd advise starting the track with the basic framework pattern of your piece, and add some of the more unique percussion elements and hat patterns after you compose some of the other elements (especially the bassline).
