You should be able to get away with one midi cable, yes. (See above post about putting it in Cubase (or your sequencer))
But you just need to have it from "Soundcard Out" --> "Virus In"

If you have 2x Midi cables going:
"Soundcard Out" --> "Virus In"
"Virus Out" --> "Soundcard In"
This will allow you to:
a) Record knob movements in real time from your Virus into your sequencer; so you could set up a track in Cubase, and tweak the filter cutoff and record exactly what you do. (Just an example, you could also record arp patterns, patch changes etc etc)
b) Allow you to dump the sounds on your Virus onto the computer.
c) Allow you to use SoundDiver to graphically edit patches on the computer and transfer the settings back and forth in realtime.
For starters...
