ok, digging up a bit here. I've decided I'd like to try a rotary, and putting the kit on the djm3000 I've already got seems a better bet than spending a fortune on a high end mixer in case I really don't like it. Problem is that pio oz stopped selling these 18 months ago. Anyone seem them available anywhere in australia?
Last resort I'll order from the US, but they were always selling much more expensive than it was going for here.
And now I am really kicking myself for not buying it when I saw it

this is kinda offtopic maybe, but what the hell, i'll post it anyway.

i have a rotary kit on my vestax pcv-175 and the installation was easy as fuck and i got the kit pretty cheap too. anyway the rotary knobs aren't like proper rotary. they aren't linear, so you can turn them about half way before anything happens and at the end minor movements make a much bigger change, so they funcion like linear faders, but are rotary.
dunno if it's the same on pioneer rotary kits but i'd assume it is. anyway they're still better than linear faders IMO but they'd be much better if they were linear. i've never understood why faders on mixers aren't linear, it'd be much simpler that way IMO.

The reason mixers don't use linear taper pots, or fader is because the way we hear is not linear. A good audio taper pot has a response curve that matches the response curve of our ears. It is easy to say the reason the mixers curve doesn't sound right is that it has the wrong pots. What is more likely the problem is cheep pots, or poor mixer design.

Some interesting stuff on the way we hear can be found with some searches on Google. Do some searches on the following if you’d like to know more about this stuff. It will help you understand why audio taper pots are used in mixers.

Linear vs. audio taper pots

Loudness curves or equal loudness curves

Fletcher-Munson equal loudness curve
