Then I went on to read tutorials online and also taught myself to mix in key.

Any good links recommended ? Thanks in advance.

http://www.recess.co.uk Pretty basic but OK. Didn't use it much but was recommended to me by a few people.

http://www.djprince.no Yes, I know the web site is shocking but persevere because there is some golden information hidden in there about mixing in key.

Finally, go out and buy 'How to DJ Properly' by Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster. Most of the information is common sense and/or a bit basic but it's an entertaining read and gives you a broad overview of just about everything!

Cheers

Mike

It's an optimistic idea, but djing skill comes from your love and wisdom of music, not information. So, unless we're pulling a matrix thing like the one Neo went through... Schools for djing aren't what they're cracked up to be.

Oh please, gimme a break. All this 'I can teach myself because I love the music' stuff is getting boring now. Yes, you have to love the music and be able to pick the tunes and understand what people will react to. BUT, if you aren't told that there are usually 32 beats to a phrase and that tunes in A minor mix harmonically with tunes in D minor, E minor and C major (as one key mixing example) then unless you carry a rabbit's foot in your pocket you won't get it right 100% of the time.

To be a good DJ you need a combination of skill, appreciation for music and understanding of how the music is produced.

Is it not just pure arrogance to feel you have nothing to learn from others or from a course or school?

Cheers

Mike

There is a school, the Rockacademy in the Netherlands.. and it's set up in co-operation with Armin van Buuren & Ben Liebrand.. but not like they really going to teach you or somethin..

Um, I have no problem with any of that.. and I didn't take any DJ or production classes. You know, there are people that are skilled with music in general, which helps A LOT with DJing and production.

DJ classes are bullshit.

That's not right. A good DJ is someone who knows his music, knows his people, and can use tracks/songs like movements in a symphony. And no class can teach you that.

Turntablism is what you might go to school for - I never did and can hold my own - but there is nothing wrong with that. The only college for it in the United States is the Berkley College of Music in Boston and some of the guys there play the tuntable in a full orchestra and use a new set of what you might call notes, but what they are, are instructions for hand movement and placement on the vinyl. Pretty cool.

Anyone can learn to beat match, and up until 20 years ago DJ's didn't mix really at all, they were judged on how well they cut. So, basically what I'm saying is our form of DJing applies turntablism, but it doesn't have to and neither does turntablism have to include DJing, they are separate things - when combined just right you get what's know as a sasha

I think everyone is missing the point of my post and it's really starting to tits me off. All I'm saying is that there is nothing wrong with learning from other people and it's a good thing to listen to what others have to say in case you've missed something obvious.

AND, when I said 'appreciation for music' I was exactly referring to knowing the music/people and being able to use the tracks and songs to great effect.

So if you read, I am agreeing really with both views and saying that talent and knowledge can and should be combined to great effect.

There are a lot of good DJs on here, I am sure, but until you are as famous as Sasha, how can you say that classes are bullshit and thus imply you have nothing to learn?

Oh and if you were born with the AB Guide to Music Theory in your head, djkoolaide, then congratulations.
