Well... not really, all depends on your programming skills. Some of the nastiest and lushest basses can be extracted from Matrix 1000, especially on the (surprisingly) brass patches, if you transpose -12 or 24. My monitors are constantly red-lining when I hit some of the bass notes. Though I do agree that fast attack on bass patches is hard to extract from M1000. That seems to be the same issue plaguing all "matrix" line synths, as my Matrix 12 is also not the fastest bass beast but its slugishness results in the most amazing pads I ever heard. No other synth comes close. I especially like the self-oscilating patches on Matrix 1000 - they are just magical. You can't help but wonder "How the heck did they program such an amazing sound?!"

And I also agree with a point made earlier about making a multitimbral synth with a mono out. Problem easily solved by having 2 Matrix 1000's linked... For under $400 nothing else comes close in the lushness or wonderful sounds. Sure, it'd be nice if you had some knobs to tweak real time without PC but it's a minor gripe, offset by almost unbeatable value for the money.

Yeah, cheetah's cool but the more I look at it, the more I realize I am surrounded by Curtis Chips... Cheetah is nice but very close to Oberheim Matrix 1000. Almost a "lite" version of OM1K. Akai is largely overlooked coz' without FX it sounds thin and... limited. I have a true love/hate affair with it. I love the looks of it but hate the limitations. Even with sub oscilator it still sounds thin. Couldn't create a single patch that would be impossible to re-create with other gear I got in my arsenal. So, I'll be dumping it soon. Mine is in museum condition - not a single f-n scratch, looks like it came out of the box only a day ago.

Oh, and Matrix 12 - is everything I expected and then some. I can actually see where Access and Andromeda got their start. This is definitely the lushest pad machine in the world. Check out "Liquid" by Klangkraftwelten - it was done purely on Oberheim Matrix 12. <-- Excellent chill out track, very airy and eerie!

If you don't crave a M12 after that, you're sonically dead
