I suspect this is true in Canada as well.

The reason why I associate myself with being "canadian" before being a member of a subregion within Canada is because I live in Ontario.

Ontario = Canada in a lot of ways. All of Canada's eyes are on Toronto and Ottawa, so people outside of those places I suspect feel seperate, and in feeling seperate they seek identity by associating themselves with their region first (i.e. "Born a Newfoundlander... always a Newfoundlander")

I observe this pattern studying the evening news in various canadian markets. Ottawa is mentioned almost every night regardless of where you live in Canada. Toronto comes a close second.

I suspect the pattern is similar in the UK? with London being mentioned on the news regardless of where you live because of its ability to constantly generate news related items (National government being the ultimate news generator)

I wonder what news America has generated for the world today!
