If they hadn't killed off the lions means of food they wouldn't be having this issue.....also, when you live in an area where there are wild meat eating creatures around, you should maybe take more precautions....maybe erect a wall or a fence or something to protect them...

Uh, you're talking about Africa here. It's not like they can afford, or the govt give a damn really.

The present state of the Tiger has more to do with poaching and population growth of the second half of the 1900s then it does the hunts of the 1800s.

Additionally, this does not negate my point that hunting does offer effective protection for people against man eating cats.

Ya but hunting them won't help....the lions are doing this as there is no other food for them due to humans killing off their means

While it is... regrettable that this situation happens, but when it comes to a choice between human and animal, who do you think is worth more?

no see, hunting will help because the man eaters will be killed.... that elimanates the immediate threat... once that is taken care of then long term solutions can be examined.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of killing animals simply for doing what animals do but if it is necessary in order to safeguard people then hey, hand me a .50 and let's go!

Yes! And I'll go you one better....... brace yourself..... Some humans' lives are worth more then others! I have to look at these situations with an eye to motivated self interest. Is it in the best interest to have these humans live in the area and perhaps make some meaningful contribution to human existance then to have these lions continue to live when it is almost certain their continued existance will not benefit human society........ OF COURSE. I couldn't give a shit less about this pride of 20 lions because their continued existance is of no benefit to ME. Much the same as if I were forced to choose between your life (yes you Max) and the lives of the Ethiopian villagers in question.... I would choose you over all of them because it is more likely, on a balance of probabilities, that you will make a meaningful contribution to the world then all of them combined. To me your life is worth more then theirs!

This idea that "all men are created equal" or the more modern "all creatures are created equal" is flawed because a) it is simply incorrect, and b) even if it were true it fails to recognize that where you start means less then where you end and how you get there.

The insurance industry is making you bitter...it's about time.

Needless to say....I agree 100% with you. Unfortunately...many people don't see the big picture and only look at what they see infront of them.

this story reminds me of a classic Mr. Burns quotation from the Simpson's episode with the "Lil' Lisa Slurry Factory" episode:

quote:
Mr Burns:
Oooh, so Mother Nature needs a favor?! Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys! Nature started the fight for survival, and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well I say, hard cheese.

If people were all equal, how would we know that we were better than them?

Sames goes for the dividing line of the rich and poor. Rich people wouldn't know they were rich unless there were poor people around to compare themselves too. That was the real reason communism failed...
