This is the article I was basing what I said earlier on -
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4249138.stm
It would appear the jury is still out, although I don't really know enough about it to say much helpful about the effects of global warming on hurricanes.

I sincerely doubt global warming is the reason this year's hurricane season has produced two whoppers. Is the climate that drastically different from what it was just 5 years ago? At best, maybe marginally so. I'd argue more to the point that hurricanes, like many other phenomena, are a cyclical system, and many have already forecasted well in advance, that we are in a 10-year cycle of more intense hurricane activity. There have been plenty of incredibly destructive hurricanes decades ago when the global climate was far different.
But to the point, we have had 2 catastrophically damaging hurricanes within a month and both(assuming Rita does) have hit extremely vulnerable, yet valuable locations. |
Its part of the same cycle that happened between the 1920's or prior - 1960's.. This same Cycle apparently started in 1995 and we got another 20 more years of the same. Now is Global Warming a player!?!.. Well, it can be said that the Atlantic waters are warmer then the previous Cycle of Hurricanes, having said that.. we are expecting more Catastrophic and bigger Hurricanes in this Cycle because of that. Even if there were no Global Warming, we would still be getting destructive Hurricanes, but the warming which is a fact, will have an even more negative effect in terms of Destructive Hurricanes.
