Ill tell you what… I am a Senior Business Intelligence Consultant and I get this ALL THE TIME! My previous clients talk to recruiter’s amongst other things that they work with and once you have a skill that’s in demand then you can plan on getting this type of call about once a month… sometimes more. Just make sure you pick the right one and don’t burn bridges and you’ll see that 6figi in no time. The more places you work the more this will happen.

we've talked about this before, I remember =)

Oddly enough after our last conversation I looked into BI and the composition which creates it and I have to honestly say, it's literally something i am interested in. I can use my technical skills and apply it to this field without hesitation and practice a great amount of efficiency. I'm only wondering if I fit an MBA at the end of my name with an MIS BS degree would I make myself a higher candidate for senior business analysis positions/sales operations director plus whatever salary tier it is in. I'd say that's a 2-3yr investment for an extra 50-80K in salary. Interesting...and yes I've ruminated the thought countless times.

i didnt realize that you were an MIS major, i always thought you were CS. nice to know we have something in common.

Although it does seem that both CS and MIS are similar fields, I believe alot of CS makes up MIS (in an overview sense). CS is a highly specific technology degree, MIS is more from a managemet perspective. I'm looking to incorporate the management aspects of information systems and apply that to business theories (possibly MBA). It's weird, I know what I don't want to do and at the same rate I don't know how I want to approach it. I like business and I'm not too interested in nitty-gritty technical notes (although I am familiar with them) I'm looking for a position that requires technical knowledge (not necessarily the know how) and can attribute to a hardline number like revenue. I want technology to assist sales with a proven track record (risk analysis) and at the same rate I don't want to be "coding" or implementing any of it. Does that make any sense?

Sounds like an MBA... Senior Consulting, Principal Consultant, Director to CIO path to me. Sounds like your going in the right direction!

yea i understand what you mean. thats the kind of job that ive been trying to find. the only thing that ive found out from asking people is that usually you have to put in a couple years of grunt work (programming and such) in order to get promoted to a position of management responsibilities. im working on some certs hoping that it will help until i go to grad school.

your right... i had 2 years grunt work took on the entire Cognos environment at my old job and was training myself on how it worked wisle running the system for 50+ clients... oh yea and i was only geting paid 32K a year. But it was the opportunity that you gota see and now I am set with over 5 years exp. Just put in the few pain in the ass years up front and take anything you can get your hands on... dont wory about the $$$ till people start calling you and saying "i have a great job and want to pay you big bucks" then you can drive to the bank. certs are great but nothing is like the real world exp! thats what they look for over anything else. good luck!

yea the experience part of my resume is killing me on interviews. so i figured getting some certs would help out. any idea on how to get some experience, maybe through different groups or charity work? any advice would help.

well... its a bitch for real. I started on a network support team. They gave me a seat next to a consultant... i worked next to him for 4 months and he liked the way i worked... he got hired as a manager of a diff company and called me up. gave me shit pay but a great opportunity in application development and it grew from there. just get in at a lower level (smaller company’s will tend to give you more stuff to do) and take anything you can get your hands on! anything at all that you can use in the future. Once people see they can go to you for help then you will start to be looked at diff from management. Ask for more work and different type of tasks... dont ask for $$$ at this point! wait and stick it out for at least a year (this is a bitch but will pay off in the long run). when you have a few years and shitload of stuff added to your resume then you can ask for $ or switch jobs and get the largest increase $$$. If you switch jobs then stay at that job for at least a year and pickup anything that you can get your hands on other then what you had at your previous job. but whatever you do dont get to the point where you know everything that your doing and your not learning new things! you could get stuck in that groove and its hard as hell to get outa it. Once you have 3-5 years you can change jobs again to something along the lines of consulting etc. and then youll see the $$$. You will be competing against all your co-workers so keep your plan to yourself and dont make enemies... you may work with or for them in the future! its a small world once your in a niche industry for a few years.
