Easiest thing would be to do regular backups of your contact database file to external storage (USB key, CD-R, etc). Most PIM programs include the option to export data to a CVS file.

As previously mentioned, you can sync up your PIM with Yahoo using their customized version of Intellisync. This allows you to view your contacts, calendar, etc from any web browser, and also doubles as offsite backup.
