OK
Let's try to make a point here !!
First let me state that I love Madonna and that i Think that she did a lot for Dance music in General. I also wnat to say that i'll use the term "techno" as in electronic music.
Let's start
First let start by speaking a little about madonna and then disco house will come. So most of the people on this board and most of the people who likes electronic dance music has to be on board of one thing, she ( Madonna ) has done a lot for techno music. Not only is she in the forefront of the Pop/dance music industry she is also a trend setter when it comes to music. Let's have an example for this point. In 1998 she released an album caller "Ray of light" not only did it prove to be one of her best selling album, but it also paved the way to a complete dance music revolution. That album, combined with many other that came out at that time ( Namely Daft punk's homework, Chemical Brother's Dig your own hole, Crystal Method's Vegas, Bob Sinclar's Champs élysée( a little later on ) and Cassius's 1999 ) had a huge effect on the number of people listening to techno music. It was now "in" to listen to techno music, the same kind of effect also took place at the beginning of the 90's with eurodance/europop. Since many people listened to techno music, the worldwide scene of techno music grew and grew to attain it's peek around 2002. Since then techno music is on the decline, we actually saw a proof of that last year when it was announced that for the first time in many years, in the Uk, more guitars than Turn tables were sold.
Not only has she been influincial with her albums but she has also helped a lot of more "underground" artists to get known by granting them the chance of remixing some of her songs. Timo Maas, Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Above & beyond, Peter Rauhofer(her official remixer), Kruder & Dorfmeister, Steve Lawler, Sander Kleinenberg (although if i remember correctly she did refuse his remix for a reason i don't remember) Deep Dish, Felix Da housecat, Dirty Vegas, Victo Calderone, William Orbit (Who produced Ray of light) and sasha only to name a few. Sure for us techno music lovers those are pretty big names but for the mainstream industry and people who are not acquainted with techno music this could have a way to get them acquainted to many subgenre of techno music. With more people getting acquainted to most subgenres of techno it also helps to bring in more people into a scene that always needs more people to just stay alive. I'm not even talking about the number of white labels and bootleg that many smaller artists have done for madonna, not that it helps in any to bring in more people into the scene but it helps for some producers to get known.
Following up, Madonna has always been a trend setters. She did it once with "Ray of light" and did it two years ago with her lattest cd "American life". That precise album had a much more punk/electro/underground feeling to it than any of her other albums. The album was full of guitar, acid sounds, electro sounds, lots and lots of vocoder effects. This is what the music scene in general sounds like now punk has become more popular than ever, green day and Simple plan topping the charts, although some purist will say that they are not punk band anymore they are still considered by many to be an entrance for punk, but that's a whole other story. Techno music and more precisely house music, is now driven with the electro feeling which, to my tastes leads nowhere, it's fun for a minute but then it becomes redudant quickly. Now, her last album was a COMPLETE disaster when it came down to sales numbers (to her standards anyway) which leads me to say that mainstream doesn't like the underground feeling her album had. By association, if mainstream didn't like her album, how can mainstream like the new electro sound of house ?
In 1998, when "Ray of light" was released, house music was in a complete lack of inspiration and by that time another HUGE Album got released: Daft Punk's Homework. The album created a completly new genre of house music: French house. A sound heavily inspired by disco . Not only did it caught mainstream ears, it also completly revolutionized house music, before it house was pretty much crappy, no one produced anything that was fairly inventive, everybody was riding everybody's cocktail and not taking any chances. For that matter, not only house music was dull, all kind of techno music was dull, trance, which was dominating the dance music charts, had not evolved and most of the industry was getting tired of the same old thing and techno had not let itself be influenced by anything since it was way too serious for that. Daft punk's put back creativity annd house music in the dance music industry, more than that, everybody wanted to make house music, but not only house music, disco house music. At that time, like said earlier, it was "cool" to like techno music, so people went to the clubs and had a blast with disco house music, and some of the songs that were produced in that time are and will be classic for a long time ( Armand Van helden's you don't even know me, Cassisu's la mouche, Daft punk's Around the world, Bob Sinclar's I feel for you and Ceronne's Give me love). Unlike now, when people don't think techno is "cool" and let's face it nowadays, dance music pretty much sucks, it has been a one note music since Benny Benassi came around.
So, if Madonna actually releases her new single which is heavilly influenced by disco, it is sampling Abba's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! It can only mean good thing for both house music, and techno music in general.
For Louis, you didn't caught the sarcasm in the other tread, because i love cheesy house music and Alec can confirm that.
For Vern, I'm getting very tired of you, i'm getting tired of you trying to be cool to everybody and trying to immitate what is cool on the board, maybe people would like you more if you'd actually start acting like yourself rather than trying to moking everybody around here.
