you can synthesise vocal, choir type sounds with formants but you need at least 3 resonant filters in order to shape vowel sounds. i guess you could sort of get nearly there using a virus + an additional software resonant filter and some of the formants in the oscillator section. but there are specific frequencies you have to use for different vowel sounds and i dont know what they are off the top of my head.
