Until you've danced your weekend away at a world-class psytrance party (sober, even) you don't have much to say on this issue. Is an experience like this universal? Of course not... but part of the reason that psytrance is so huge globally is that people can come to these events and have what you might call a spiritual trip, through primal dance. Look up some stuff on technoshamanism and the roots of trance culture... oh and I don't mean this club-friendly stuff you guys listen to - I mean trance you're not going to get a clue listening to a handful of tracks in your bedroom and analyzing it. Chances are you just aren't going to get it anyway! That's fine... I'm just telling you the trance experience isn't something you can really comment on until you go out to a big party and really lose yourself in it - then it might all make sense!

Well FUCKING said!

Psytrance is a different scene, with different people, with a completely different backround; one that you have to experience *with an open mind* before you can go and make ill-informed assumtions. It is just music, but it also represents a specific culture, not disimilar to the "hippie" culture of the 60's and early 70's. There is definatly a strong undercurrent of global spirituality and awareness that really shows up in the music, the festivals and the gatherings. Among other things.

The goa music was more spiritual. The current psytrance, sorry but on the whole it is not spiritual music. The old goa sound by Astral projection, Hallucinogen, Chi-A.D., Cosmosis, Man with no name, Etnica, Miranda, and i forget a lot...those artists used to make "spiritual goa trance", but the new trend, full on psytrance got nothing spiritual IMO. Goa music was born in India (hence it's name Goa) that's why at the origin it was connected with indian divinities, Buddha, etc...listen to some old school goa trance, or the recent compilation called APSARA (Suntrip records), lots of oriental melodies. And just look the old covers of some albums and compilations

I think its important to note the difference between spirituality and psychedelia. One can equate a similarity in drug use between say weekend partygoers getting tripped out and say modern day shamen who use drugs as a way of connecting to the spirit world. Its all about the context you put it in and the self belief of the individual as to why he is there.

Trance music can be seen in the same way.

To genuinely go on a trance like journey... (for which the soaring repeditive nature of goa lends itself to) or to get completely mind whacked at the sonic array of fucked up sounds (which modern psy is quite good for)

To me, spirituality is psychedelia with a purpose which is what goa seemed to have but psy definately lacks these days.

I'd really like to know what happened to goa and why they dont make that style anymore. There is the odd album that tries to capture it (like Aspara), but even the labels based in goa seem to be cranking out hard twisted psy these days. It seems like psychedelic journeys have become this scary intense rollercoaster through a lot of twisted dark sounds.

Very well said indeed. I'm setting my sights on the Gathering 2006 in Japan. Happens once a year in late September.

Goa evolved.

Simply put, most of the newer artists are based on the principle of putting energy into a track with a deep driving bassline. It's much more intense.

By the way, I heard Astral Projection is coming out with a new album soon.

No, it's not. Nothing is more intense that the deep multilayering of oldschool goa.

That doesnt account for the change in sound. Goa was beautiful, uplifting at times and very melodic. Psy these days rarely has these qualities. The driving bassline has always been there from the start, it just got more full on and punchier with psy.
