The whole thing runs on BeOS which (besides audio/video) is useless for anything else. You'd have to get a notebook exclusively for running FinalScratch (that is, if you don't get one in the package for $3000+).

About the whole 12ms (the specs on the FinalScratch website say it's 12ms) latency ... it shouldn't be that much of a problem, but considering the accepted latency for pro virtual-analogue synths is around 2-4ms I'd say there's still room for improvement.

Nonetheless, I would get the system after all the initial problems have been ironed out, definitely sounds like a good investment.

There is a big article on Remix Mag, from what I understand in the $400 package doesn't include the laptop but you provide your own. What they do provide is the hardware and the BEOS/Finalscratch software CD. You can install BEOS and dual-boot or perhaps just boot from the CD provided, I'm not sure. But I think you can use pretty much any laptop that has a video card and USB chipset supported by the OS. As far as the MP3s go I'm sure BEOS can then access your windows partition just like Linux does.

I've read that BEOS is known to be very stable and it is the best at real-time stuff, that's why they picked it over windows (no BSOD in the middle of your set).

Now I don't know if BPM studio is a good example, but on my laptop it runs at 30ms delay...good enough response to mix and beatmatch, I don't see how 8ms would be a problem. But then again i'm no REAL DJ

I've decided to wait to get CDJs and instead get real turntables when final scratch comes out...that way I can be a REAL DJ like you guys!

I've seen the package on www.audiolines.com for $499.95 USD..
Does this mean I'll stop buying vinyl? I dunno... I think I'll wait a few more months/years and see how this thing fairs.

You know what I've been waiting for them to develop, is a machine that plays mp3's off CDs.. so you won't need a computer... CDJ's in my opinion are a waste of technology, why don't they do the same with mp3's on CDs you can store alot more songs.

Quddha, FYI I've seen DVD players that can play mp3s from CDs as an extra feature for about a year now...There are portable CD players that can do the same as well.

Oh yeah, I know. But I'm talking in terms of DJ equipment.

hmm

so basically this piece of kit allows you to have the best of both worlds? Both Vinyl & Mp3 mixing combined?

8ms is still recognisable, I use Trakor a lot on 54ms and its just useable, and i've tried 9ms and it still is just noticeable. With a good soundcard, say a top end M-Audio card you can get a few microseconds latency, and set your ASIO to 0ms, but i'm sure theres a way of combining both vinyl and mp3 now. Either way, sounds good, i'll check it out.

Another thing just occured to me, surely the MP3s that you play will be illegal? (Unless you paid for them), and if not then why not just download the software...

Well you know, I have 2 pioneer CDJ-1000`s, and theyre just great. It sounds like you`re really spinning vinyls! The scratching is also very good... But they`re also expensive (Like 1300$ each?)
But I have very much mp3s ripped from vinyl, and this way it`s as if ur really mixing some vinyls ;)

It`s just great! but expensive to buy at first, but after that its much cheaper than real vinyls of course...!

well you're supposed to buy records and rip them....that's legal. That way you can take all your records to your gig. Of course there's no way to check that. And as for just downloading the software, you still need the hardware that comes with the set (connectors, the special "records" and the interface between turntables and laptop).
