i think some people aren't realising how difficult it is to gauge whether a track will be easy or hard to ID. Other than things like Delerium - Silence, Out Of The Blue, Urban Train etc the really really obvious ones which maybe amount to about 200 tunes max, then the rest of trance really does totally depend on each person as to whether they have heard it. Something like NuNRG - Casino that a PvD fan would think is ridiculously easy then someone who doesnt listen to PvD won't have a clue what it is.

With that in mind some of the ideas put forward here simply will not work.

what about adding 5 .jpgs of album covers as extras to ID

the tables Fundamental did are pretty cool, it gives extra status to get one ID nobody else got should be kept going (if the ID contest maker has the patience of course)

what about having the next ID Contest made by the guy with more points that never did an ID Contest before, instead of the winner which has won it a trillion times already.. it's the only way me and others have a chance

or maybe.. special themed ID Contests. like, let's say a round of ID Contests per genre. one house contest, then one trance contest, then techno and so on. or by year, only 1997 tracks allowed, stuff like that

i dunno, just brainstorming really. what i know is that there's being more and more people participating on this, and they are fun, so even if the concept doesn't change it should be kept going..

by the way, anyone has the full list of winners? i could search a bit and compile one if there's interest

Since I'm a complete stats freak and had nothing to do for the last couple hours I took this task already.. even with the TA search broken

List of winners:

All-time table:

(might be duplicates in the list due to people changing their nicknames)

And here's the Excel file, featuring these 2 tables plus the list of links for every single ID Contest thread:

Awesome stuff! Gotta love stats!

I have a new idea, but it might be a bit complicated.

I'll explain later. Pub time now.

i suppose one option could be to take a few of the ideas mentioned and add them all together to make some of pub quiz type thing rather than just a set of 15 second samples.

for example someone mentioned having 10 pics of album covers that people have to guess, then maybe one round of 10 trance id's, 10 house id's etc, then maybe 10 questions about artists or alias'.

if done well could be very interesting, but if not done well could fall straight on its arse!

According to that table, the first ID contest I made was the most popular contest of all time, and the 2nd time I made a contest, was the second most popular of all time. Perhaps I should start participating in these things again.

interesting facts:

- the edition that had a winner with the least points ever was also the contest with the most tracks to identify. the best was starglider, who only managed 35 points in 85 tracks (!!!) must have been an hard one..
- Sand Leaper was both the first to win it twice and to win it three times.

ok i've got loads of free time again this afternoon, will at least start the work on that.

what i need some help is on the nickname changes, to avoid double entries. there's not many of them in the winners but i'm sure a couple will come up when compiling a full list of participants which is gonna be huge.

so let's start with a list of nickname changes:

_The_Storm_ -> paranoik0
[N]uk|eu[Z] -> JMF [TrAcId] (not sure, can someone confirm?)
Project-T -> Luke Terry (again not 100% sure)

Thanks for the input so far guys.

As far as the hard/easy/medium ID scheme goes, I'm afraid it simply will not work in reality. Looking at it objectively, there really is no such thing as a "hard" or "easy" ID, as it all depends completely on the tastes of the respective contestant. Thus, doing it like that will undoubtably alienate some potential contestants, and that's what we're trying to avoid as much as possible, since the genre split among TAs is big enough as it is. A themed contest has been an idea I've tinkered with myself, but again, this might also put off people who started listening to EDM recently or just don't listen to trance/techno/whatever.

It seems like the core concept of the comp has little room for major changes without excluding some potential contestants. On the other hand, you could ask how far we're supposed to strain in order to please as many as possible...

For now, I think we'll have to settle for several lesser changes and amendments. A revamp of the remix point system and the additional tables are good examples of that, and I think I'll work with those when I put my next comp up.
