I gotta agree, the overplaying of some tracks really does lend itself to hatred! This is especially true if the songs aren't that good in the first place (Egs. anything by Lasgo, Ian Van Dahl or Sammy)! But, the negative influence that these people are drawing really is bringing alot of unneccesary criticism to the genre. We need to start being properly critical, for music's sake!

My take on... (various mixes planned, updated when I can be arsed)

I kind of agree with Ian^ on the As The Rush Comes thing. Maybe Whiteroom, maybe not. As for Shivers and Serenity, I don't think they've had a big enough impact for them to be detrimental enough. They'll be forgotten in a year.

But ATRC, yes. I actually liked the track - it had a few decent remixes and all that. But the general effect of that song was to show how by cramming a vocalist into a song, regardless of how shit the singing and/or lyrics may be, you are guaranteed success. And that prompted the fluffy vocal trance, y'know like any track with Justine Suissa or Jes Brieden in it, at like 125bpm and some gay guitar thing in the background (*COUGH* GABRIEL AND FUCKING DRESDEN *COUGH*).

In fact, for me, G&D have ruined everything. BEAUTIFUL THINGS, FUCK OFF. But that's purely personal opinion, and I can't set that down as fact. I just hate the pussified stuff they come out with, I hate this "natural" edge they're trying to give to trance.

The '99 era was enough of a deviation from what "trance" was meant to be (i.e. hypnotic, driving) but this new sober vocal material is even further a deviation. What is entrancing about Motorcycle - Around You? Absolutely nothing.

Obviously musicians can make music they like - it's hard to criticise a producer or a song as being bad for the scene.

But I just fucking hate the way people flock to tracks like 'Interstate - I Found U'. It's pathetic. The lyrics are absolutely god-awful - soppy, fabricated shite that belongs in 12 year olds' CD collections. The track has no drive whatsoever, it's not trance, it's completely contrary to trance. It's pure rubbish. AND IT IS ADORED BY SO MANY PEOPLE.

That's where trance falls.

Col, Ian, deflate your egos please. Not everybody got into trance in 99, so while I realize the contempt you may have for an overplayed post-99 song, you just simply aren't looking at the big picture. To say As the Rush Comes is detremental to EDM is absolutely absurd. This track pulled many people into the genre and its production did not comprimise the integrity of EDM. Now, you may not enjoy how it was overplayed, but that is not the fault of the track, rather lazy DJs who simply ride the coattails of the latest hit. In short, get over yourselves and perhaps you will see what is truly detremental to EDM, and not just what you have come to loathe for your own personal reasons.

The Ministry of sound compilation stuff, the kinda trance that you still hear at amusement parks, the kind of trance that transformed the crowd from a spiritual movement to a meaningless trend and replaced the genuinely fun people with the trend-hopping sheeplike "see and be seen" crowd.

Its kinda funny though, the people who came before us saw us as sheep when we first got into this stuff, they would probably name PvD and stuff as what ruined the style for them just because it attracted people like me . It really makes me wish I was lucky enough to be a part of some musical following that hasnt been corrupted by its own success, but I cant choose what sounds appeal to me based on who is in the crowd, no matter how hard I try.

Suburban internet geeks such as myself and most of you all seem to be the people that are blamed for the decline of the EDM world in the late 90's, people cite the big trance anthems like out of the blue and urban train as their evidence of that, but now us suburban geek kids are finding our turf invaded by a new crowd of muppets flocking from radio tunes and background music adoring DJ sammy and such, and we name their music like Lasgo and Oceanlab as the songs that are bad for the EDM world. I imagine in a few years time those kids will be here complaining about a new set of songs that has attracted yet another outside demographic that was not there before. And the circle of bitching will continue through eternity.

I guess every new crowd has to deal with this bitching from the old crowd until they either gain acceptance or displace the old corwd. So we have a new crowd coming in, while at the same time the older crowd is still compaining about us, and we are complaining about an even newer crowd. I for one wish we could just all peacefully coexist instead of saying that one persons music is ruining the scene for another person, nobody is forcing anyone to listen to their music.

ever since that tune...trance as slowly been deteriorating because i think it put the idea that "hey lets just make a huge super saw synth" in everyone's heads in attempts to mimic the success of tiesto's remix. from then on out, people started trying to make these melodies that were a little too overdone and ridiculous and took focus away from more important things like rhythm and flow...

it totally put the wrong ideas in young producers and trance listeners and killed the genre...

why stop there?? try (insert tiesto song here) on for size i'm sure that if people heard something like space tribe or art of trance (some good artists) the stereotype 12 year old collection of This Is Trance (more like this is bullshit) would never come. nothing good ever came from it (although sara machlaughlan is on it and her music is good, but not for a trance remix)....[/rant]

and yes i agree... dj sammy killed the idea of good trance infecting dancefloors.. lolz i never heard that train song (lucky for me) ... i got into trance by the back door... psytrance and goa.
