Listen to chillout with one of those sleeping masks (the ones that covers your eyes).

Smoking a joint is not a bad idea if your into that.

I do have these same problems as well, especially since I tend to stay up and watch Canadiens games until 5 in the morning, which is a huge downside with being an NHL fan in Europe.

But tea is a good trick as some mentioned...I've heard that a glass of warm milk before you hit the bed should do the trick as well, although it doesn't really work on me. And don't eat large meals before you go to bed, you might fall a sleep due to the blood sugar, but you won't be able to get some deep sleep. I always end up getting nightmares when I eat large meals before going to bed

But then again, the best trick is definitely to stay awake through a whole night. The real challenge is to keep awake during the whole day as well - but if you manage, you'll sleep like a baby after that.

And oh, almost forgot...a tough work out session will probably help you to get some sleep as well...

Ah, it just so happends I'm studying sleep right now - and I'm also suffering from insomnia.

First of all - sleeping pills are really a final solution. Everyone experiences sleep problems at some point in their lives, and it usually goes away on it's own, but sleeping pills can have a permanent effect on your metabolism.

Alcohol is also a big cause of sleeping disorders. Seems like it would make you fall asleep at first - but it has damaging long term effects.

That's what I used to do when I tried to recover from two months of working night shifts. Good idea, but it doesn't work.

You'll fall asleep any time of day if you've skipped a night, but you'll shortly fall back to your disorted schedule. Your circadian rythms can only be modified at a maximum rate of one hour per day or so. This means that you can easily shift your sleep period foward by going to bed an hour later every night, but shifting it backwards is alot more difficult.

Fun fact; the majority of people are lactose-intolerent on at least some level. It has an effect on your overall concentration, sometimes it can make you feel dizzy and tired. The effect is minimal in most cases, but it's still there. So in other words; taking a large glass of milk before going to bed can help you fall asleep.

Depends if his sleep problems are cronic insomnia or just not being tired. If he's not tired enough, then a workout will do the trick as long as it's not right before he goes to bed (working out rises your body temperature, and your temperature needs to be lowered for you to fall asleep). In the case of insomnia, the problem isn't not being tired (you can be plenty tired, in fact), it's that your brain has trouble 'shifting' between states of consciousness. It's often caused by stress and worry - so trying to relax might be a better idea.
